Bikaner is a Rajasthani city. It is situated in the northwest of the
state and is the fourth largest city in the state. The city was
founded by the Jats and Rao Bika, name of the city is taken from
the name of its founder. After the major canal projects initiated by
the Government of India completed, the city was also found to be
good for its cultivable land. Now it is producing mustard, cotton,
groundnut and vegetables. The city is also famous for its spicy
snacks especially the Bikaneri Bhujiya.

The history of the city
Bikaner was once known as Jangaladesh, as the place has been
cited as this name in the Mahabharata. After a long gap of being
surrounded in the jungles the original city was founded by Rao
Bika in 1488. A magnificent fort was constructed in the city of
Bikaner by Rao Bika along with many other monuments. After the
establishment of British Rule in India, Bikaner was undertaken by
the British and three new forts were constructed in and around the
city of Bikaner. It was the pathway to the thar and therefore, was
considered a good business place.

Economy of the city
The economical backbone of the city is its small scale industries as
well as the tourism industry. Bikaner earns a lot from the tourism
because it hosts a lot of historical monuments. Apart from this after
the advent of canals in the city the agricultural sector has also
flourishing here.

Geographical facts of Bikaner
The city of Bikaner is surrounded by sand dunes. The climate here
is arid type and therefore, it is too hot and dry in summers while it
is somewhat humid but still hot about 50 degrees in monsoon
season. The temperatures in the winter season days are normally
high due to Sun shining but the nights are extremely cold. The best
time to visit the city is somewhere between November to February.

built by Raja Rai Singh. Junagarh fort is a great art work and

Red Sandstone. It was once the home for the King of Bikaner, but
now has been converted to Hotel and is surely the best attraction
for the tourists hanging out at Bikaner. The Lalgarh Palace is
another hot destination which was built around 1902 to 1926 by
Raja Ganga Singh. The building is built on the Indo-Mughal
architecture and was designed by Sir Swington Jacob, a British
