COURSE DESCRIPTION
Designed to provide students with a solid foundation in algebra this course is intended primarily for students with scientific or
technical majors, and with MTH-1130, prepares students for the study of calculus. Topics include real and complex numbers,
intervals, algebraic, exponential and logarithmic functions, graphing and solving various types of equations involving second and
higher order terms, radicals, and absolute value. Graphical interpretations are emphasized throughout the course. Some topics are
supported by the use of computer software such as MAPLE and the use of graphing calculators. MTH-1120 is offered as a traditional
lecture course, online course and web-hybrid course.

OBJECTIVES;
     After completing this course, you will be able to:
          1. Use basic algebraic concepts
          2. Classify functions by their characteristics, including graphs, intercepts, zeros,
             asymptotes, and solutions
          3. Graph a variety of functions both manually and with the graphing calculator.
          4. Solve both algebraically and graphically algebraic, logarithmic, and exponential
             equations
          5. Solve inequalities algebraically and graphically.
          6. Solve systems, including non-linear equations, using both algebraic and graphical
             methods.

GENERAL EDUCATION ACADEMIC SKILLS
As explained on pages 45 through 40 of the College of Southern Maryland 2010-2012 Catalog, Math 1120 is among those courses
considered to be "general education." Of the 59 Academic Skills associated with general education courses (listed on pages 48 and 49
of the Catalog), you will be exposed to and tested on the statements listed under Mathematics (repeated below).

                  Graduates should be able to:
                  15. perform mathematical operations accurately;
                  16. make mathematical estimates and approximations to judge the reasonableness of results;
                  17. interpret graphs, tables, and charts;
                  18. understand mathematical information and relationships stated in words; and
                  19. utilize appropriate mathematical models to solve problems while recognizing the assumptions and limitations of
                      the models.


HOMEWORK, ATTENDANCE, AND HELP

It is essential that you attend every class and do all of the assigned homework. New material is introduced and you will participate in
the solution of example problems at almost every class meeting. If you miss a class, you can view a lesson online in MyMath Lab.
There are Lecture Videos and PowerPoints. The lectures are given by the author and keyed to the textbook. They are a very good
source of extra help.
The MyMath Lab is a website that includes animated explanations of material in the textbook with guided examples, "Help Me Solve
It" exercises, practice quizzes, and practice tests. It also includes fully worked-out solutions to all odd-numbered exercises in the
textbook. Personalized study plans are also available based on the results of these activities. The study plan diagnoses weaknesses
and links students to tutorial exercises for objectives they need to study.
Students using MyMathLab can use their instructor's Course ID to sign up for math tutoring from the Pearson Tutor Center. The Tutor
Center is staffed by qualified mathematics instructors who provide one-on-one tutoring via toll-free phone, email, and real-time
Internet sessions. Tutors can assist students by explaining examples in the textbook and reviewing solutions to exercises with answers
indicated in the textbook.
Students will be responsible for accessing MyMathLab throughout the semester to complete required online quizzes for this course.


REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING
1. ATTENDANCE
      Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class--any student beyond ten minutes late will be counted as absent.
      Bonus points will be given for consistent attendance: 0-1 absence--2 points, 2 absences--1 point
      These points will be added to the student's final average.

2. GRADES
      1. Unit tests – 3 exams for 45% of your grade
         Tests will be given according to the attached schedule. Tests are based on lectures, textbook, and homework
         assignments. If you need to miss a test for a legitimate reason, call me before the test and a test will be place in the
         Testing Center. In most cases, you must complete this test before the next class session. No makeup tests due to poor
         test performance will be given.
      2. Quizzes-- 5 quizzes for 15% of your grade
         Quizzes may be given during class time, may be take-home, or may be on MyMathLab. These quizzes will contain
         problems similar to the homework assignments from the previous night(s). The procedure for missed quizzes is the same
         as for missed tests.
      3. Homework--We will spend the first portion of each class session reviewing the previous night(s) homework
          assignments and answering any questions you have. Although homework assignments will not be graded, any lack of
          completion of the assignments will severely affect your performance in the course. It is essential that you have ample
          practice with the types of problems given in order to fully understand the material. Do not fall behind on your
          assignments!!!
      4. 2 Maple Computer Projects for 10% of your grade
         Two projects involving the use of Maple software will be assigned, collected, and graded. Details related to these
         projects will be given out in class.
      5. Review Assignments--3 assignments for 10% of your grade
          These assignments will be given as a review for the unit tests and as an optional review for the final. They are in the
          MML and can be redone as many times as you wish. They are a way to check your knowledge and to be used as a study
          tool.
      6. Final Exam—For 20% of your grade--final is mandatory and will cover the entire semester.

MATH TEAM
          CSM has a Math Team that meets once a semester and competes with other regional colleges by taking tests and comparing
results. Extra credit is available for students who participate on the Math Team. Students will receive five points plus half the total
points earned on the competitive exams added on to one of the course exams. Interested students should email the Math Team
coordinators at Donnas@csmd.edu or Sandrap@csmd.edu to sign up.

AUDIT AND WITHDRAWAL
         Course requirements are identical for credit or audit students. Everyone must take the same exams and submit all required
work. The deadline for changing your status from credit to audit or audit to credit or withdrawing from the course is Monday,
November 8, 2010. It is your responsibility to initiate the paperwork. Students who abandon the course without withdrawal will
receive a grade of "FX". Students who have enrolled for credit grading will not be allowed to switch to audit unless they have been
and intend to attend class regularly and complete all assignments. Students may switch to an audit any time before the end of the
withdrawal period. The appropriate form must be used. When switching from credit to an audit, the reasons for making the change
and the requirements for eventually receiving a grade of AU must be specified. Failure to follow this procedure will result in a grade
of "WD" rather than a grade of Audit.

ACADEMIC HONESTY
         Plagiarism and /or copying another student's work may result in an F for the course and further disciplinary action by the
college. Students are responsible for reading the college policy on Academic Honesty in the Student Code of Conduct section in the
Student Handbook.

Students are expected to perform their own academic work. Plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty are considered
extremely serious offenses. Students are personally responsible for understanding the various forms of academic dishonesty as they
are explained in the Student Code of Conduct in the Student Handbook. Ignorance of any requirement for academic honesty will not
constitute an excuse from disciplinary proceedings. The Student Handbook defines cheating as the act of the deceitful presentation of
material; giving, or using information for the purpose of misrepresentation. Students are responsible for adhering to the Student Code
of Conduct in all situations at CSM including the obvious assumption the instructor makes when a student hands in any work with
his/her name on it that this is that student's work only. To avoid college disciplinary action in this course, it is strongly suggested that
students take measures to ensure that cheating does not knowingly or unknowingly occur in any form. During tests, keep your desk
faced forward, keep your test out of sight of others, and keep unapproved papers and materials away. During in class group quizzes,
work only with your partner and keep unapproved papers and materials away. Online quizzes taken through MyMathLab are expected
to be taken only by the student registered for the course. While working on Maple Projects in public labs, do not save your work on
the computer. Save it on a removable storage device to ensure that no one can use your work as their own. Do not send work to the
printer in a public lab without quickly retrieving the work. You are responsible for possible instances of cheating in all situations at
CSM including the computer lab.

DRUGS AND ALCOHOL
         The college is a drug-free zone. No trafficking or use of drugs or alcohol will be tolerated. Tobacco use is not permitted
indoors anywhere on campus. Provisions of the student handbook will be
followed.
CELL PHONES AND PAGERS
         All cell phones and pagers must be turned off during class. The only exception is if there is a potential emergency and you
inform the instructor of this before class.

UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS
        Unauthorized persons (children, friends, family members, and persons not enrolled in the course) are not allowed in the
classroom. Details of this college wide policy are given in the student handbook.

DISABILITIES AND SPECIAL NEEDS
         Students requiring accommodations such as large print, special furniture, etc., as described in the Americans with Disabilities
Act, should meet with the instructor immediately. Unless you speak up, your instructor has no way of knowing about your special
needs.

COMMENTS
         This course includes a fairly large amount of material; therefore, we must maintain a reasonably rapid pace during class
sessions. Despite this, please remember that you are encouraged to ask questions during class or seek out my help at other times.
Also, become acquainted with your classmates and form study groups, exchange phone numbers and help each other. You will be
surprised how much this effort will help you.
         I want you to succeed in this course! To be successful, you MUST come to class regularly, complete the homework
assignments, ask questions, and seek help when necessary. I will be happy to provide extra help to students before or after class. In
addition, you can receive help though the college tutors or study groups. However, when all is said and done, it is YOUR effort,
YOUR time, and YOUR determination that make the difference between failure and success.
