Information and Suggestions

Though other hotels exist in the uptown Charlotte business district and may be booked through
Internet search, the hotels described below have provided NBEO candidates with negotiated
corporate room rates and all are within reasonable walking distance of the NBEO/NCCTO. The
NBEO recommends that you choose a hotel within walking distance of the NCCTO since traffic in any
metropolitan area can be unpredictable and parking can be problematic and expensive.

A limited number of rooms are set aside for use with negotiated rates; it is best to reserve early
to secure the special room rate. If you encounter any problems with use of the special hotel
links or any facet of the NCCTO Travel Information, the NBEO would like to know. Please notify
us by email at info@optometry.org.

The links for these hotels take you directly to each hotel’s website that includes a description of the
facility and allows you to make a reservation using the NBEO room rate. Typically, these reservations
require a refundable deposit and can be cancelled if necessary, up to a defined number of
hours/days before the check-in date. Assuming a reservation is cancelled following the posted
guidelines, the first-night deposit will be refunded and there will be no charge. Conversely, a
reservation made through travel websites (e.g., Expedia, Priceline, Travelocity, etc.) generally is paid
for when the reservation is made and can NOT be refunded if there is a change in plans.

The Overstreet Mall is an extensive, third-floor network of indoor, connected, above-street plazas,
hallways, and enclosed over-the-street walkways that meander between and among uptown
buildings. Commercial establishments (e.g., shops, restaurants, banks, a post office) in the Mall
generally are open only on weekdays during regular business hours, though the walkways themselves
are open daily from early morning until late evening. Several Overstreet Mall restaurants close to the
BB&T Building’s third-floor elevators open early on weekdays to serve breakfast (for example,
McDonald’s, Brad’s, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Caribou, Starbuck’s; only McDonald’s is open on
Saturdays, at 7:30 a.m.).

Depending on from which hotel you come to the NCCTO, use of the Overstreet Mall may provide
full or partial indoor access to the NCCTO and is especially accommodating during inclement
weather. Directions are provided in the following hotel descriptions regarding the most efficient way
for candidates walking from the below-listed hotels to the NCCTO to access the indoor walkways
when needed. In addition, there are many security guards stationed throughout the Mall. The guards
will point you toward the BB&T Building if assistance is needed. Some of the Overstreet Mall
landmarks are pictured in the Uptown Charlotte and Overstreet Mall Landmarks section of the
NCCTO tab on the NBEO website and are intended to help you to make your way to your clinical
exam.

The given number of city blocks between hotels and the NCCTO in the following hotel descriptions is
approximate. Variability in city block size is significant. Walk times also will vary from person to
person and will be slightly affected by WALK and DON’T WALK traffic signals at intersections. The
walk times below include the average time spent waiting for and ascending in a high-rise elevator.

A rough comparison of the distance between the NCCTO and the linked hotels can be seen on the
map below. The blue circle is the National Board headquarters (NB) and the seven green hotels
offering a negotiated rate to NCCTO students are identified, in random order:

To familiarize yourself with Part III CSE location, it is highly recommended that prior to your exam
appointment, you take a practice walk or a practice ride (in the hotel’s complimentary shuttle) to the
BB&T Building, where the NCCTO is located on the 20th Floor. This will minimize any confusion on
the morning or afternoon of the exam. It is a good idea to keep track of the time needed to walk/ride
from the hotel to the NCCTO, and that you allow a few minutes after arriving at the NCCTO to relax
and freshen up before the exam begins.

If you intend to use a hotel’s complimentary uptown shuttle to reach the BB&T/NCCTO, it is
suggested that well before you are scheduled to leave the hotel for your examination, you let the
front desk know when you will need it.
