Brett Chapman Current position: Senior Scientist in the Department of Physics at the University of Wisconsin‐Madison Research interests: I am an experimentalist. My research is focused on the reversed‐field pinch (RFP), primarily the Madison Symmetric Torus (MST). Much of my effort is devoted to improving the RFP as a fusion concept. In part, this means working on possible routes to higher plasma density, temperature, beta, and energy confinement. This has included further development of inductive current profile control to reduce magnetic fluctuations and transport, which has in turn led to improvements in temperature, beta, and confinement. This work has also included the application of frozen pellet injection. Coupled with current profile control, this has led to substantially higher density, and further improvements in beta. Another important part of this work is identifying and understanding the physics of limiting values of these fusion parameters. For example, the limit on beta is being probed with pellet injection, and now with neutral beam injection as well, and coupled with this experimental work, we run 3D MHD simulations to try to understand what instabilities may be limiting beta.
