HARVEST FESTIVAL 2009 IS IN THE BOOKS
October 7, festival day, started out with a bang. Rain and wind threatened to challenge all the hard
work of our food booth captains and our scores of volunteers. As we surveyed the grounds about 8:30
that morning, tent walls were flapping and workers were scurrying. We thought it was going to be a
very long day.
Suddenly about 10:30, the wind shifted, the clouds headed out, and blue skies emerged. Patrons
began sampling the chowder and chicken wings, and Harvest Festival 17 was off and running.
This year’s festival was dedicated to the memory of Ray Haynie, one
of the festival’s original co-chairmen. Ray passed away in June after a
valiant battle with cancer. Ray’s widow, Sandra, and son Sean were
there in a hospitality tent sharing memories and greeting many of
Ray’s old friends and others who just wanted to stop by and say hello.
The tribute culminated with the presentation to Sandra and Sean
of a proclamation recounting Ray’s contribution to this festival by
longtime friend David Parker and Virginia’s governor, Timothy Kaine.
The food was great and one of Hampton Roads’ favorite bands,
Butter, rocked the afternoon. All in all, it was another great year.
On behalf of all of the staff here at the Chamber and the entire
festival committee, thanks for coming and making this another
success. We’ll see you May 5, 2010, at the Seafood Festival at Tom’s
Cove Campground on Chincoteague.

Conserving resources and costs
In this day and age, businesses are doing everything they can to watch expenses and be
environmentally sensitive. The Chamber is no different. The Chamber’s board has decided
the newsletter that you are currently reading will be the last print edition. Beginning in 2010,
we will start producing an electronic newsletter. Those of you who have taken advantage of
newsletter inserts as one of your member benefits, have no fear. We are working on offering
advertising for a nominal fee similar to what we have done with the inserts. You will hear
more from us on this as we get particulars sorted out.
In addition, as print editions quickly become out of date and advertisement sales have
waffled, the Board of Directors has decided to no longer produce a printed business
directory. An online business directory searchable alphabetically or by business category is
available at www.esvachamber.org. Provisions also will be made for members to request a
pdf of the directory information that can be e-mailed to them after the first of the year.

Have you recently joined the chamber and are looking for a way to quickly
expose your business to other members? Network in a relaxed atmosphere
during Business Before Hours. The unintimidating crowd size, generally
40 or so, is perfect for some one-on-one introductions and small-group
conversation. Hosting one of the morning events couldn’t be easier. We
have dates available in 2010. The host business is responsible for providing
the refreshments. The Chamber takes care of everything else. If you’d like to
be on the list to host, please call (757) 787-2460.
