GrapeFest Vintner’s Auction Classic
It’s that time again! The Association needs your help in making this year’s GrapeFest Vintner’s Auction Classic a
huge success! This year, the Vintner’s Auction will be held one week prior to GrapeFest on Saturday, September 6th
at the Grapevine Concourse overlooking Grapevine’s premier golf course. Please mark your calendars to join us to
KICK OFF the 22nd Annual GrapeFest - Lone Star Grown, Internationally Known.
With proceeds benefiting the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association, we need EVERY Texas winery and industry member to
contribute auction items. Wineries, please work with your area marketing partners to create packages that will generate higher bids.

GrapeFest People’s Choice – Call for Wineries DEADLINE EXTENDED
This year's people's choice will take place September 11, 12, 13 & 14. Participation in the largest consumer judged wine competition
in the United States will provide your winery the opportunity to showcase your wines to as many as 9.000 people. The People's
Choice Wine Tasting Classic consists of 11 sessions over the weekend, with wines being judged in 10 categories and awards being
presented on Sunday, after the last session.

First Enology Graduate Degree Programs in Texas Announced
by T. V. Munson Viticulture Enology Center At Grayson County College and Texas A&M University-Commerce
Denison, Texas – July 1, 2008
During this period of rapid growth and expansion of the Texas and Southwestern winegrowing industry, Grayson County College and
Texas A&M University-Commerce are pleased to announce their partnership in offering a Master of Science in Agriculture with an
emphasis in Enology and a Graduate Certificate in Enology. This initiative on the part of the T. V. Munson Viticulture Enology
Center at Grayson County College and Texas A&M University-Commerce is expected to distinguish the winegrowing industry in
Texas through advanced education, professional experience, and training of its practitioners.
Students entering the new Graduate Certificate Program in Enology will be required to meet the following eligibility requirements: (1)
a Bachelor of Arts or Science, and (2) the Associates of Applied Science in Viticulture and Enology or Certificate in Enology from
Grayson County College or its equivalent.
Students entering the Master of Science in Agriculture Program with an emphasis in Enology must have earned (1) a Bachelor of Arts
or Science, (2) the Associate of Applied Science in Viticulture and Enology or the Certificate in enology from Grayson County
College or their equivalents, and (3) specific coursework in microbiology and organic chemistry, or the coursework would have to be
taken prior to full acceptance into the program.

First Annual TTB Expo by Don E. Walden, TWGGA General Counsel
On June 17-18, I had the opportunity to attend TTB’s First Annual Expo in Covington, Kentucky, right across the Ohio River from the
TTB National Revenue Center in downtown Cincinnati. The Expo’s focus was presentations by TTB employees about federal laws
and regulations that apply to wineries and the other industries that the agency regulates. Especially since this was TTB’s first effort at
conducting a comprehensive program for its regulated industries, the Expo was a good source of some new information and an even
better opportunity for face-to-face contact with the very employees who work with winery applications and reporting.
As far as the content of the presentations goes, I thought the most helpful was one that addressed changes in winery operations. After
attending that session, my suggestion to every winery is this: before making any change to your business – whether it’s altering your
premises, adding a trade name for labeling purposes, selling an interest in your business, or anything else – ask yourself whether the
change will make inaccurate anything you have ever reported to TTB. If the answer to this question is “yes,” you need to report the
TTB actively sought feedback from participants about the program, and I strongly encouraged them to conduct the Expo at different
locations around the country in upcoming years to make attendance easier on people from all sections of the country. I won’t hold my
breath thinking that my suggestion will sway TTB’s planning of future events, but regardless of location, I plan on attending in the
future, and encourage anybody interested in more information to give me a call.
TABC Proposed New Rules §31.10 and §31.11 for the Complaint Process
The TABC has sent out a draft of two proposed new rules §31.10 and §31.11 for the Complaint Process. The purpose of these rules is
to provide the public with the commission’s complaint process as required by §5.53 of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code.
No public meeting is scheduled at this time, however, if there is a request for a meeting to address questions and concerns a meeting
will be scheduled within the next several weeks.

Wine America Regulatory News: Special Occupational Tax Repeal Clarification
Earlier this month WineAmerica sent out a notice on the Special Occupational Tax repeal. To clarify the notice, only new wineries
(established after July 1, 2007) are required to file the paperwork. If you have alread filed and all of your TTB records are up to date
you DO NOT need to refile each year.

Wine in Dry Counties from Gabe Parker
The current requirement for wineries in dry areas is they should plan that at least 30% of the wine they have in inventory at the end of
the year must be made from Texas fruit.
Using all your bottle and bulk inventory as of January 1, 2008, use this formula to calculate the requirement –
1. Separate Texas fruit and non Texas fruit and total the two.
2. Add all bulk and bottle fruit acquired during the year and separate Texas, non Texas and then total.
3. Add to beginning year totals.
You would comply with the 30% if your Texas fruit is greater or equal to 30% of the yearly total.
Remember, this applies to the total and not individual bottles; also all bottles whether sold, bottled, stored, etc must have been bottled
somewhere in Texas, no exceptions.
The 2008 Lone Star Wine Competition – Medal Results
The Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association is pleased to announce the results of the 2008 Lone Star
International Wine Competition is now available online at www.txwines.org/industry. Medals are listed by
winery or by division. Also available are the list of Grand Star Winners (Best of Show).
Medals and Grand Star Awards will be mailed out to the winners by July 15th Congratulations to the winners of
the 2008 Lone Star International Wine Competition.

Certificate Program in Viticulture
This Certificate Program in Viticulture is the product of collaboration between the Department of Plant & Soil Sciences at Texas Tech
University, the Texas A&M Extension Service, and the Division of Outreach & Distance Education at Texas Tech University. The
rigor and quality of the program is designed for individuals with an orientation toward commercial grape production and professional
work in the viticulture industry.
The certificate consists of six courses, held over a two-year period. Successful completion of all six courses is required to receive the
Professional Certificate in Viticulture. The certificate program will operate on a cohort basis to enhance the learning experience and
facilitate networking opportunities for participants. For this reason, the program is limited to 40 participants who are willing to make
the commitment to move through all courses over the two-year period. Enrollment in individual courses is not available.

Vintner rebuilds winery one year after devastating flood

AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) -- For Hill Country business owners set back by last year's flood, the past 51 weeks have been tough.
David Brinkman, the owner of the Lost Creek Vineyard, spoke last year in the dark days following the flood. On Tuesday he was
pleased to report that his future is growing brighter.
"Everything has just been destroyed, I've never experienced total devastation, yet it really hadn't hit me yet," Brinkman said last year.
Yet after losing 12,000 bottles of his finest wine and the small building where visitors taste it, Brinkman stayed true to his word and
his sign, which read "Closed flood, open soon. Sorry!"
"I can sit down and cry about it, or I can get out and do the best I can to get it going," Brinkman said in 2007.
Since last year, the debris has disappeared, and swans are swimming in the creek pictured on his label, but Brinkman hasn't had time
to bottle one drop of wine since the flood.
Luckily, in this business, older is better. Brinkman said he has been too busy building a new place for visitors to sample the fruits of
"Before the room was so cramped, it was just a small room, I do remember that," said wine customer Charles Green.
The doors opened for the first time this past weekend, complete with the ornate Brunswick bar Brinkman salvaged from the flood and
"I would never have done it before the flood, but in some ways it may be a blessing," Brinkman said. It was a blessing that came after
plenty of doubts while waiting on loans and draining his savings. Yet instead of looking at the glass half empty, Brinkman's hard work
has paid off, and his vines will reap a profit once again.
"I had a vision of the way it was going to look, it turned out so much better than my vision," he said.
