Dr Kenneth Yuen of Prince of Wales Hospital and I have
joined the Cambodia Medical mission organised jointly by
Hong Kong Rhenish Church, Hong Kong College of
Paediatricians and Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society
from 22nd to 27th October 2005. Since this is the first time in
conducting volunteer eye service in Cambodia, we faced a
lot of uncertainties and apart from operating microscopes,
we were requested to bring all surgical instruments and
consumables to Cambodia. We would like to give our
sincere thank to COS of PWH and TMH who allowed us
to borrow 4 sets of cataract extraction instruments and
also AMO who gave us a special offer on IOL and
viscoelastics purchase in view of charity purpose.

We overcame a lot of difficulties and obstacles and our
team is very pleased with the result of this impossible
mission. Moreover, it was a very valuable experience for
personal growth. The church has already decided to
continue eye mission in late Sept 2006. I strongly
recommend this activity to other interested colleagues.

We were based at the only hospital at Phnom Penh with
eye specialty clinic and provided free eye service for 4
days. Our eye team consisted of 2 eye doctors, 6
registered nurses and 2 interpretators. Despite of
     different cultures, languages, expectation and
communication problems, we managed to perform 14
     ECCE+IOLs uneventfully.
