                 INTRODUCTION
 We played with magnets as children but the world of
magnets is isn’t kid’s stuff.

 They help us to communicate , travel & fabricate.
From the junk yard to outer space, to the cutting edge of
medicine , these amazing forces of attraction & repulsion
are almost everywhere.

 They form an integral component of nearly every
object that we use in day to day life & in every field of
engineering like electrical, mechanical ,electronics,
computer science, etc. & also in the medical field.
      DISCOVERY OF MAGNETS
A magnet is a material or object that produces a magnetic
field , thus pulling on other ferromagnetic materials such as
IRON & attracts or repels other magnets.

LODESTONES :-

   Earth’s only naturally occurring
  magnet.

    Discovered about 4000 years ago in
  a place called MAGNESIA .

    Chemical formula : Fe3O4      .
   PROPERTIES OF MAGNETS
1. There are North Poles and South Poles.

2. Like poles repel, unlike poles attract each other.

3. Monopoles never exist.

4. Magnetic poles of a magnet have equal strength.

5. Magnetic forces attract only magnetic materials.

6. If suspended freely , a magnet aligns in north-south
   direction.
      MAGNETIC FIELD

It is a space around a magnet in which the force
of attraction or repulsion on a magnet can be
seen.

  Types of magnets
Permanent Magnets : Once magnetized , they
retain a certain degree of magnetism.
Ex : AlNiCo magnets , Ferrites

Temporary Magnets : Act as magnets in presence
of a magnetic field but loose their magnetism afterwards.
Ex : Soft iron

Electromagnets : Produced by placing a metal
core inside a coil of wire carrying a electric current.
Ex : Solenoids
Superconductors : Strongest magnets of all.
       COMPASS
Used in determining direction.

Compass needles are
magnetized and respond to
the magnetic field of the
Earth.

Used in past for navigation , especially
during bad weather when there were no
stars or sun visible.
           MAGLEV TRAINS
 MAGNETICALLY LEVITATED TRAIN.


 SPEED AROUND 500-600 KMPH.


 FIRST DEVELOPED BY JAPAN IN 1980’s.


 USES SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIAL IN THE
 COIL.

 USES LINEAR SYNCHRONOUS MOTORS(LSM).

     Magnetic Resonance Imaging

In 1940’s it was discovered that the magnetic
  fields of even atoms can be followed & actually
  seen if they were stimulated by another set of
  magnetic fields.

Basically, MRI is a body scanner that is sensitive
  to different tissues .Thus, it is able to differentiate
  the magnetic signal from the atomic nucleus of
  healthy tissue from that of a cancer tissue.

• The nickel iron core of the earth gives the
  earth a magnetic field much like a bar
  magnet.
• The magnetic field of earth doesn’t help us
  just navigate , it actually saves the planet
  from being destroyed by magnetic storms
  emanating from space.

    CONCLUSION
The world of magnets is really fascinating.

Magnets have been virtually in every
aspect of our lives & the future of the
modern generation solely depends upon the
future development of magnets & their
applications.
