					Astrobiology, Fall 2005
Science Paper Seminar

You can work in groups of 3-4 for this project. As a group you must choose one
of the science papers from the journal Astrobiology. There are two types of papers from
this journal, research papers and hypothesis papers. The research papers focus on a study
with experimental evidence to support the researcher’s findings. The hypothesis papers
focus on an idea that is not necessarily testable by current research methods but can be
explored using other known models.

Dates to be aware of:
Wed. October 26-papers handed out
Mon. October 31-choose a paper
Wed. November 1-progress check
Wed. November 9-presentations

You will need to be familiar with the abstracts from all of the science papers
BEFORE the groups present their summary reports.

Your presentation may be made with one person as the “lead” speaker or each
person speaking on a section. Please include at least one visual image to accompany your
presentation. Your goal in the presentation is to convey the key ideas and conclusions
from the paper that you have read. Your group will also need to submit a written
summary of the presentation and be sure to address the questions below.

Research Paper questions:
1. What is the background information that a reader needs to know to understand the
purpose of the study or focus of the paper?

2. What is the purpose of the study? What are the real questions being investigated?

3. What types of experiments (materials and methods section) were done to address the
   question?

4. What were the results or findings from the experiments? What conclusions were
   drawn?

Hypothesis Paper questions:
1. What is the background information that a reader needs to know to understand the
purpose of the study or focus of the paper?

2. What is the purpose of the study? What are the real questions being investigated?

3. What models are the basis for this idea/hypothesis? Since this replaces the
experimental portion, what evidence is supporting this hypothesis?
4. What conclusions were drawn?
