Ms Windows is a g.u.i. based single user multitasking operating system. In this type of operating system
user can interface with the computer through graphical symbols such as Icons, window dialogue box etc.
G.U.I –Graphical user interface.

WHAT IS WINDOW?

In graphical user interface G.U.I. rectangular area representing file, folder or any application etc. which
has its own boundary is called a window.

TYPES OF WINDOW

Generally windows are two types:
1) Document window.
2) Application window.

WHAT IS DOCUMENT WINDOW
The window use for creating document is called document window for example:- Word Pad, Ms Word,
Window, Notepad window etc.

WHAT IS APPLICATION WINDOW
The window open for a specific application program is called application window.
e.g.-My computer window, my document, scan disk window, dialogue boxes, games window etc.

        Generally document window open with the help of application window.




WHAT IS TITLE BAR
It is represents the title of the window.
WHAT IS BUTTONS
Buttons are three types:-
   1) Minimize.
   2) Maximize.
   3) Close.

WHAT IS MENUBAR
This bar contains different menu, file, edit, view, help and there respective instructions.

WHAT IS TOOLBAR
This bar contains symbol to instruction which are frequently use.

WHAT IS WORKING SPACE
This is the area where an user can do his work.

WHAT IS SCROLL BAR
It is use for moving through the window from one place to another place. It is two types:-
     1) Horizontal Scroll bar.
     2) Vertical Scroll bar.

WHAT IS STATUS BAR
It gives the status information about the window.

ICONS
These are the graphical symbols that we use.

WHAT IS DESKTOP
The initial screen appears on the monitor after booting is called desktop, or the screen system on the
monitor on the monitor screen is called desktop.

ICONS
Any graphical or pictorial represents of a file, folder or any application is called icons.
       Generally icons of desktop are: My computer, My documents, Internet explorer, Recycle bin,
Shortcut icons etc.

WALL PAPER
The statistics picture appears on the background of desktop is called wallpaper.

TASK BAR
The bar appears on the button of the desktop is called task bar. Generally task bar contains following
items.

    1) Start Button.
    2) Clock.
    3) Shortcut Symbol.

START BUTTON
It is used for starting any application start button appears on the left side corner of the task bar.
SHORT CUT SYMBOL
These are the symbols used for quick launching or opening for specific application.

HOW TO OPEN A START MENU
  1) Using mouse by single clicking in start button.
  2) Using keyboard by pressing the window key.
  3) By pressing CTRL+ESC.

PROGRAMME
It is used for opening or accessing different application program like Ms dos, Ms Word, Paint, Power
Paint etc.

FAVORITES
It is generally used in case of internet accessing. In the menu user can store his favorite’s websites,
channels or application for quick accessing.

DOCUMENT
Menu contains short cut documents folder and information, about recently use documents or program
maximum of is recently use documents can be reside in this menu.

SETTING
This menu contains different useful program which are generally used for customizing the computer as
well as adding or removing new hard ware or soft ware.

FIND
It is generally used for searching purpose we can search for a file, a folder or any application program
using this menu.

RUN
It is used for running an application very quickly and specifying the file and its path.

HELP
This menu contains various help information or help topic of different windows application.

LOG ON OFF
It is used for personality the user program through passwords. Generally it is used for security purpose.

SHUT DOWN
This menu is used for closing the computer in various modes like stand by, restore, and shutdown, restart
the computer in Ms – Dos mode.

   1)   STAND BY It close the computer for a short time period.
   2)   RESTART  It closes the computer and then start the booting.
   3)   SHUT DOWN  It completely close down the computer.
   4)   RESTART THE COMPUTER IN MS-MODE  It close the computer and then start booting in
        Ms-Dos mode without loading window.

   ELEMENTS OF WINDOW

   1. MY COMPUTER My computer folder is an important element of windows operating system.
      It contains all the drive information as well as control panel, networking and printer folder. Before
      opening any drive we have to open the my computer folder first. Generally my computer folder
      appears as first icon in the desktop.
   2. MY DOCUMENT This folder is a default folder of windows because all the files created by
      using any application like Ms word pad, Paint, Excel etc.. are by default stored in this folder. It we
      don’t maintain any other folder. Generally my document folder icon appears on the desktop as
      second icon.
   3. INTENET EXPLORER Internet explorer folder is used for opening different files or websites
      across internet. This folder is also called as “Web browser” before opening any site in internet. We
      have also create and run a new websites using this soft ware or web browser.
   4. RECYCLE BIN Recycle bin folder is like a dustbin in windows operating system. Because all
      the folders deleted by the user from computer are stored in the recycle bin. We can recover our
      important files and folders from recycle bin after their deletion. Generally, recycle bin folder
      assigned some of the percentage of hard disk capacity to hold files and folders. We can delete files
      or folders from the recycle bin in order to remove completely from the computer. This folder icon
      appears the desktop as fourth icon.
   5. CONTROL PANEL This folder contains different applications which are used for customizing
      the computer. We can do different operation like adding or removing hard ware and soft ware
      setting desktop themes date and time adjust the mouse as well as keyboard can set passwords. We
      can also change the wall paper and set the screen saver using control panel.
   6. ACCESSORIES Accessories folder is an important element of windows operating system. It
      generally contains all the application programs as well as the utility program of windows operating
      system. We can open any application program of windows using from this accessories folder.

  7. WINDOWS EXPLORER Windows explorer is very important element of an operating system.
       This program combines both properties of file, manger and program manger. Generally window
       explorer consists of two panes. That is left pane & right pane. Left pane is the program manager
       part and the right pane is the file manger part. Left pane displays all the programs or contents of
       computer and the right pane displays the contents of selected programs or folders in the left pane.
               In the left pane a + sign before a folder name tells that folder contains sub folder and – sign
               appears when we click on the + sign tells that the folder has been explored and no sing
               before a folder tells that there is no sub- folder under that folder.
HOW TO START A PROGRAM?
  I)       Click on start button.
  II)      Go to programs.
  III)     Select the application you want to open.
  IV)      Then click on it.


HOW TO CLOSE A PROGRAM?
  a. Click on close button in the window.
  b. Go to file menu.
  c. Click on exists or close or by keyboard presses Alt + F4.

HOW TO CLEAR THE CONTENTS OF DOCUMENT MENU

   1)    Click on start button.
   2)    Go to setting.
   3)    Click on start menu and task bar option.
   4)    Click on clear button.

HOW TO SET WALL PAPER?

   1)    Click on start button.
   2)    Go to setting.
   3)    Click on control panel.
   4)    Double click on display icon.
   5)    Click on back ground tab.
   6)    Select the wall paper.

WHAT IS SCREEN SAVER?
Screen saver is an animated program which generally used for saving the phosphorus screen monitor when
the user does not use the computer for a specified time period.

HOW TO SET SCREEN SAVER?

   (1)   Click on start button.
   (2)   Go to setting.
   (3)   Click on control panel.
   (4)   Double click on display icon in the display box.
   (5)   Click on screen saver from the screen saver list.
   (6)   Then choose your screen saver.
   (7) Set the time.
   (8) Click on apply.
   (9) Then click on ok.

HOW TO ADD A PROGRAM UNDER START MENU?

   a)   Click on start button.
   b)   Go to setting.
   c)   Click on task bar and start menu option.
   d)   In the display dialog box click on start menu tab.
   e)   Click on add button.
   f)   In the display dialog box, click on browse button.
   g)   Choose the program you want to add.
   h)   Then click on open button.
   i)   Click on next button.
   j)   Choose the target folder.
   k)   Click on next button.
   l)   Give a name to the program.
   m)   Click on finish button.
   n)   Click on ok.

HOW TO REMOVE PROGRAM UNDER START MENU?

   1)   Click on start button.
   2)   Go to setting.
   3)   Click on task bar and start menu option.
   4)   In the display dialog box click on start menu tab.
   5)   Click on remove button.
   6)   Choose the program you want to remove.
   7)   Click on remove button.
   8)   Click on close button.

HOW TO MINIMISE ALL OPEN WINDOW?
1. Right click in blank area on task bar.
2. Click on minimize or window option.

HOW TO MAXMISE ALL MINIMISE WINDOW?

   1. Right click on blank area on the task bar.
   2. Click on undo minimize option.

DIALOGBOX

A dialog box is a window which is open whenever we click on and to accept using dialog or option.

WHAT IS FILE?
A file is a container of related data or information.
        Or a file is a name given to a specific memory area of secondary storage device where we can store
our related data or information’s.

WHAT IS FOLDER?
A folder is a container of related file and sub-folder or a folder is a name given to a specific area of
secondary storage device where we can arrange our files and sub folder.

BASIC FUNCTION OF FILE MANAGEMENT

   1) HOW TO CREATE A FILE OR FOLDER?

   a)     Open any drive.
   b)     Go to file menu.
   c)     Click on new.
   d)     Select folder or file.
   e)     Give a name to the file or folder.
   f)     Press enter.

   2) HOW WE CAN ENTER DATA IN A FILE

   i)        Open the file.
   ii)       Enter the data.
   iii)      Go to file menu.
   iv)       Click on save.
   v)        Then go to file menu.
   vi)       Click on exist or close.

   3)     HOW TO REMANE A FILE OR FOLDER
   1)     Select the file or folder.
   2)     Go to file menu.
   3)     Click on rename option.
   4)     Write a new name in the file or folder.
   5)     Then press enter.

   4) HOW TO DELETE A FILE OR FOLDER?

   1)     Select the file or folder.
   2)     Go to file menu.
   3)     Click on delete option or delete key.
   4)     In the display dialogue box. Click on yes button.

   3)   Then right click over the selected file or folder.
   4)   Click on restore option.

   1) Right click over recycle bin icon.
   2) Click on empty recycle bin option.
   3) Then select yes.

   3)   Go to edit menu.
   4)   Click on copy option.
   5)   Go to the target folder.

   1)   Go to the source folder.
   2)   Select the file or folder you want to cut.
   3)   Go to edit menu.
   4)   Click on cut option or press CTRL+ X.

   6)   Then go to edit menu.
   7)   Click on paste option or press CTRL+V.

WHAT IS UNDO?
It is the process of canceling the previous actions done by the user. The short cut combination is
CTRL+Z.

WHAT IS REDO?
The process of canceling of undo function is called redo. Short cut combination by key boar is CTRL+Y.

WHAT IS CLIPBOARD?
It is a temporary memory area where we can store cut, copy item may be file or folder or any text or any
object.

HOW TO SET DIFFERENT ATTRIBUTES OR PROPERTIES ON A FILE OR FOLDER

   1)   Right click over the file or folder.
   2)   Click on properties option.
   3)   Click on select different option to be set by clicking on its respective check boxes.
   4)   Click on ok.

HOW TO FIND A FILE OR FOLDER.

   1)   Click on start menu.
   2)   Go to find.
   3)   Click on find files or folder.
   4)   Write the name with the combination of wild ward characters.
   5)   Select the drive where you search.
   6)   Click o find new button.

HOW TO CREATE A SHORT CUT OF A FILE OR FOLDER

   1) Select the file or folder.
   2) Right click over the selected file or folder.
   3) Click on short cut option.

HOW TO CREATE A SHORT CUT IN THE DESK TOP

   1)   Select the file or folder.
   2)   Right click over the selected file or folder.
   3)   Click on send to option.
   4)   Click on create short cut on the desk top.

DIFFERENT BETWEEN MS DOS AND MS WINDOW

   1) In case of windows an user can interface with the computer through graphical symbols. Where as
      in case of dos the user can interface with the computer through commands.
   2) Ms dos is a single user and single tasking (CUI) operating system. Where as windows is a single
      user multi tasking (GUI) operating system.
   3) In case of dos a file name having up to 8 characters without space. Where as in case of windows a
      file having up to 256 characters with space.
   4) In case of dos the extension part is optional. Where as in case of windows the extension part is
      compulsory.

DIALOGUE BOX

LABLE Label is the text string or names used for identify an element of a dialogue box.
TEXT BOX Text boxes are rectangular area in a dialogue box which can accept user text and display
box for any information. We can insert or enter or display a single text used for text box.
LIST BOX List box is used for displaying a list of information’s at a time. Which is not possible by
using text box?
COMBO BOX Combo box is the short form of combination box. It combines both the properties of a
text box and the list box. This combo box looks like a text box having drop down arrow symbols at right
side of the box.
OPTION BUTTON Option buttons are used for accepting only one option at the same time.
CHECK BOX Check box is used for accepting user options on like option buttons. We can choose
more than one options.
FLAME Flames are use for giving a name to group of options.
COMMAND BUTTONS These are used for executing user instructions after selecting various options
in the dialogue box.
TAB BUTTONS These are used for graphing number of elements in a dialogue box with a single name
and it appears at the top of a dialogue box and looks similar to the command buttons.
        Generally, tab key is used the moving for one elements to another inside the dialogue box frame
top to buttons in forward direction.

APPLICTION OF WINDOWS 98/2000/XP

All the application program modify program of windows operating system are reside under accessories
programs group which are installed or store at the time of windows installation.

GAMES This program sub group under accessories consisting windows games like splite air, card,
mines wiper etc.


SCAN DISK It is the utility program used for to check the error and rectify the error. Window can do
two types of scanning process.

           1) STANDARD DISK
           2) THOROUGH DISK

   1) STANDARD DISK In case of standard scanning process the scan disk, programs scan only files
      and folders area of hard disk.
   2) THORUGH DISK In case of thorough scanning process the program do the standard scanning
      process as well as can surface areas of hard disk is scans hole the hard disk.

WORD PROCESSOR
Word processor is software by using which we can create, save and edit our document is called word
processing soft ware. Note pad and word pad are processor of windows operating system under
accessories programs group.

OTHER WORD PROCESSOR
  1) Ms Word
  2) Word Star
  3) Word Perfect.

NOTE PAD It is the simple text editor of windows operating system. It is also called as ASCII text
editor. The file extension of note pad is (  txt ) using notepad we can create a file which have the capacity
up to 64 k.b. We cannot format an individual part of document in notepad. Generally notepad is used as
program editor by other application like Oracle, HTML, SDI ( Single Document Interface), Interface
Word pad, Note pad etc. and MDI ( Multi document interface), Ms word ect.

FILE MENU

   1)   NEW To create a notepad file.
   2)   OPEN To open an existing notepad file.
   3)   SAVE To save the current file.
   4)   SAVE ASTo save the current file in to another name.
   5)   PAGE SET UPIt is use for setting up page before printing the document.
   6)   PRINTTo print the current document using printer.
   7)   EXIT To close the application.

EDIT MENU

   1)   CUT Cut the selected text and place it in clip board shortcut combinations (CTRL+ X).
   2)   COPY Places the selected text in the clip board shortcut combinations is (CTRL+C).
   3)   PASTE Paste the item at the current cursor position from the clip board (CTRL+V).
   4)   DELETE Deletes the selected text or item.
   5)   SELECTED ALL It selects the all text or whole document (CTRL+A).
   6)   FIND AND REPLACE Open find and replace dialog box (F5).

WORD WRAP
It is used for displaying the document by breaking the lines according to the window size and disappearing
the horizontal scrollbar.

SET FONT (Style of Character)
It is used or setting of font styles types and font sizes to the whole document. This is also known as
formatting of notepad.

SEARCH MENU

   1)   FIND It is used for finding a specified text.
   2)   FIND NEXT It is used for repeating the finding option (F3).
   3)   HEOP MENU It gives the help information about notepad.
   4)   ABOUT NOTE PAD It gives the information of note pad application.

WORD PAD
Word pad is the more advancing word previous than notepad. It is file extension is (.doc). The size of a
word pad files may exceed by k.b. We can apply formatting to individual part of the document which is
not possible in case of notepad. It is very useful word processor than notepad.

FILE MENU

   1) NEW To creating a new file (CTRL+N).
   2) OPEN (CTRL+O).
   3) SAVE (CTRL+S).
  4)   SAVE AS
  5)   PRINT (CTRL+P).
  6)   PRINT PRIVIEW It displays the preview of document before of printing.
  7)   PAGE SET UP It is used for setting up margin like top-button, left-right margin setting up paper
       size and paper orientation etc…..

  8)   SEND Sending the current document to another computer using to internet.
  9)   EXIT ALT+F4.

EDIT MENU

  1)  UNDO CTRL+Z
  2)  CUT CTRL+X

  5)  PASTE SPECIALI t is the special item to apply paste like formatting simply text line or both
      text formatting.
  6) CLEAR DELETE
  7) SELECTEALL CTRL+A

  10) RELACE It is use for replacing the old text by the specified new text.
  11) LINKS It is use for setting up different properties. It is use for setting of different objects
      properties like, bit map image, object used for editing bit map image or image object.

  1)   TOOL BAR It is use for displaying or hiding the standard tool bars.
  2)   FORMAT BAR Display or hiding the formatting tool bar.
  3)   RULER BAR Display or hide the rule or scale.
  4)   STATUS BAR Displaying or hiding the status bar.
  5)   OPTION Using for different options for word pad.

INSERT MENU

  1) DATE TIME Inserting the date time at current cursor position in various formats.
  2) OBJECT It is used for inserting the different object like bit map image, graphical chart,
     calendar etc……

     FORMATTING

     The process of changing the appearance of the document by the available tools is called formatting.
     In word pad there are three types of formatting such as:-
      1) Character lowest level formatting
      2) Paragraph formatting.
      3) Page document formatting.

              In character formatting we can apply the following tools to a character or a set of formatting.
     1)   Font type Times new Roman, Arial black …..etc.
     2)   Font size Minimum-8, Maximum-72
     3)   Font co lour
     4)   Font effects
     5)   Strike through

     In character formatting can be possible by the font. Option available under this formatting.
     1) Go to format menu.
     2) Click on font option.
     3) In the dialog box, select items different character formatting.
     4) Click on ok.

     Bold CTRL+B
     Italic CTRL+I
     Under Line CTRL+U
     Size In creating the font size  CTRL SHIFT+<

     PARAGRAPH FORMATTING
     In case of paragraph formatting we can apply following paragraph formatting items.
     1) Alignment
     2) Indentation.

     ALIGNMENT
     The size o text to be entered in a paragraph is called alignment.
     Alignment is three types:-
        1) Left alignment CTRL+L
        2) Right alignment CTRL+R
        3) Centre alignment CTRL+E
The paragraph can be applied by the paragraph option under forma6t menu.

INDENTATION

The process of giving a space between the margin and the body of the paragraph is called
indentation. It is of three types such as:-
   1) First line indentation.
   2) Hanging indentation.
   3) Paragraph indentation.

   1) FIRST LINE INDENTATION The space between margin and the 1st line of the
      paragraph accept and old other line is called first line indentation.
   2) HANGING INDENTATION The space between the margin and lines of the paragraph
      except 1st line is called hanging indentation.
   3) PARAGRAPH INDENTATION The space in between margin and the whole paragraph
      called paragraph indentation.

HINTS
The 1st line indentation and the paragraph indent can be apply using the sub option it paragraph
under format menu but hanging indent can be possible using this.

PAGE DOCUMENT FORMATTING
In this type of formatting we can set different margins like left, right, buttons, paper size and paper
orientation to the document. It is possible by the option page set up under file menu.

LISTING STYLE
Giving number or a symbol to different paragraphs to document for identification purpose is listing a
paragraph. In word pad we can apply only one type of listing style. That is bulleting style.

STEPS
  1) Go to format menu.
  2) Click on bullet style.

TAB
This option is use for setting a new tab stop position to the tab key by default the tab stop position is
0.5”.

STEPS
  1) Go to format menu.
  2) Click on tab options.
  3) In the tab dialogue box enter a new list stop value.
  4) Click on set button.
  5) Click on ok.
