ANAC Activities in 2008
The following conferences or sessions on analytical chemistry was held or will be held for Asian analytical chemists including Japanese in Japan, 2008. 1) Asia International Symposium 2008, Analytical Chemistry session in Annual meeting of Chemical Society of Japan in March 26-30, 2008, Tokyo, Japan. 2) Asia Young Analytical Chemist Session 2008 in Tokyo Conference, September 3-5, 2008, Makuhari, Japan, organized by Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry 3) Presentation in English by young analytical chemists in Annual meeting of Japan Society of Analytical Chemistry in September 10-13, Fukuoka, Japan, 2008. 4) International Conference on Flow-Injection Analysis, September 28-Oct. 3, 2008 Nagoya, Japan, organized by Flow-Injection Analysis Society. The conference is not limited for Asian analytical chemists, but a lot of participants from Asian countries are expected.
When Prof Tabata was an organizing committee member of Analytical Chemistry Conference at Branch of Kyushu in Japan, he proposed to have a session of English presentation for young Japanese chemist and foreign students, mainly from Asian countries in order to promote or encourage discussion, exchange of opinions or merge between Japanese young analytical chemists and foreign students in Japan. The special session is held every year in analytical chemistry conference and has continued more than 10 years. The annual meeting of chemical society of Japan also started the same session for young Asian analytical chemists.

ACEN Attending the 20th ICCE at Mauritius
ACEN has provided scholarships to young chemists to attend 20th International Conference on Chemical Education (ICCE), held in Mauritius, August 3-8, 2008. The announcement was sent out to the members of FACS on the web and the deadline was June 30th. One applicant from Taiwan was reviewed by three reviewers from Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong. Due to only one applicant applied and recommended by the reviewers for the scholarship, the total amount of $500 of the ACEN budget was awarded to chemistry teacher, Mr. Chun-Keng Liu, at Taipei Municipal Zhung-Lun Senior High School, Taipei, Taiwan. In order to link FACS and IUPAC, the 2009 scholarship will be given to young scholars or doctoral students who are attending the 3rd Network of Inter Asian-Chemistry Educators (NICE) workshop ( see http://www.u-gakugei.ac.jp/~nice2009/index.htm) in Tokyo, Japan. NICE was a regional organization of Committee on Chemical Education of IUPAC. Continuous effort on bridging FACS and IUPAC will be pursuing by ACEN.

ANEC Activity through CRC CARE
CRC CARE was investigating an opportunity to develop a workshop on Waste with the National University of Singapore, in 2008. However, due to various circumstances, it was decided to postpone this workshop and get Professor Naidu to present, in Singapore, to a wider audience on the topic. To this end, Professor Naidu was a keynote speaker at the City Waste Asia 2008 conference in Singapore. The conference brought together city administrators and industrial waste generators operating within the city to find out how they can cost-effectively manage their increasing waste problems.
Professor Naidu‟s presentation was titled: Turning wastes into valuable resource – minimizing landfill, and focused on the challenges for sustainable waste management; utilisation of waste streams for efficient recycling and reuse; and clean up of contaminated land fill sites and examine landfill space issues.
In looking forward, it would be appreciated if CRC CARE could re-apply for funding to support people from developing countries to attend our Clean Up Conference in September 2009. The conference is held every 2 years and covers several themes relating to the assessment, management and remediation of environmental contaminants. The 2007 event brought together more than 400 leading scientists, industrialists and regulators from more than 30 countries. As part of this event CRC CARE was able to secure funding for 8 staff from the Asia Pacific region to attend via AusAID funding. At the 2009 event we hope to again support the attendance of staff from the region.

NPMC is working toward 13ACC, AIMECS09 and Pacifichem 2010
The NPMC project helped organize sessions on medicinal chemistry and natural products at the 12ACC in Kuala Lumpur last year. Three of the invited speakers were provided by the project, and the project funds for 2006-7 were used to partially support the expenses of these speakers. The project also continued its formal association with the Phytochemical Society of Asia, with the project director joining the committee as the Australian representative. In 2007 planning was also put in place to organize the AIMECS09 international medicinal chemistry congress in Cairns, August 2009, which the FACS project will be part of. It is envisaged that the RACI, AFMC, FACS (project) and the AMMA (Australian Molecular Modelling Assocaition - a Chapter of the MGMS) will hold the meeting jointly. The venue has been booked and the meeting advertised at AIMECS07 (Istanbul) and in Australia. The intention is (like in other years) to roll over the project funds for 2008 and combine these with the 2009 project funds to support the AIMECS09 event, and also the project's participation in the 13ACC in Shanghai. The project will run a symposium on medicinal chemistry and natural products, as we have at all of the previous ACC congresses since the project has been in existence. NPMC would like the EXCO to help facilitate the submission of proposals for symposia for Pacifichem 2010 which opened on Jan 1 and close on April 15 for the first round. INPC intend sending the Presidents of all FACS member societies a letter inviting their societies to register as OPOs (Official Particupating Opganizations) for Pacifichem 2010. This gives member chemists from those societies discounted registration for the conference, and allows young chemists to apply for bursaries via the Young Scholar Program.
