TOWN HISTORY
First mentioned in 869 as “Padun”, Baden was given town status by Emperor Friedrich III. Vineyards and spa baths are the most important pillars of the economy. The Turkish invasion and extensive fires destroyed the heart of the town, which was to be rebuilt completely in the Biedermeier period. Architecture, art and garden cultivation blossomed to a high level at this time. Such architects as Carl von Moreau, Josef Kornhäusel and Otto Wagner left their marks through noble town houses, palaces or beautiful squares. The imperial court moved its summer residence to Baden in the years 18031834, as did illustrious spa guests and artists. At the time of the Vienna Congress the spa town counted among the most important locations in Europe, and was the most important spa resort in Austria between the wars.

A magnetic attraction at the turn of the last century. “one” drove to “summer holidays” - and one could recuperate in nearby forests, on traditional alpine meadows or mountain peaks in cool temperatures. Cures for respiratory, cardiovascular and locomotor apparatus ailments have been successfully used for over 175 years. Between a cure and a walk one met at Zauner and in the evening one amused oneself at the theatre with a Lehár operetta. Stroll through Ischl and experience the old traditions just as they formerly were, but now carefully renovated and modernised.

TOWN HISTORY
The oldest brine baths in Austria were founded in 1823. The parents of Franz Joseph, later the emperor, were already coming to Ischl by 1827 to find a cure for their lack of children. The couple received four “salt princes” in the years following. Emperor Franz Joseph stayed in Bad Ischl for the first time in 1849, it was here that he celebrated his engagement to his wife to be, “Sissi”. The imperial couple resided from 1875 for many years at the “Kaiservilla” of today. Many famous personalities, aristocrats, statesmen and artists moved to Ischl in those days, such as the composer Franz Lehár who lived and wrote 24 operettas here. In 1920 Bad Ischl was designated a spa resort.

TOWN HISTORY
Lively settlement since the New Stone Age, first written record in 1182 and has been a town since 1299. Major fortress against Hungary, and a major trading centre due to its favourable location on trading routes. Blossomed economically as a result of numerous privileges, such as the “right of entrepot” or the “preemptive wine selling rights”. As the Ottoman threat grew stronger, in the 16th century the fortification was strengthened under master builders from Upper Italy. After the collapse of the monarchy the boundaries were re-drawn and Bad Radkersburg lost more than 50% of its municipal area. Economic upturn through the use of the mineral and thermal springs since 1970.

TOWN HISTORY
Enns is a historic site. The area around Enns has been inhabited for 4000 years. In around 200, the Romans set up a legion camp and a town settlement, both of which were named Lauriacum. Under the Babenbergers, Enns grew in significance and in 1212 received its town charter from Duke Leopold VI. This document – still in its original form – is the oldest town charter in Austria. With its unique town tower, the landmark of Enns, the Renaissance and Baroque facades of the houses and the preserved town fortification, Enns presents medieval flair in a modern town.
ATTRACTIONS
Town Tower: Built in 1568, around 60 metres high and the emblem of the city. The gallery (157 steps) offers a majestic panorama view. St. Laurenz Basilica: Displays Roman foundations and the remains of the early Christian church. The oldest element today is the tower, from the 9th/10th century, built using Roman construction materials. The presentday church was built at the end of the 13th century. St Mary Town Parish Church: One of the oldest churches of the mendicant order in Austria (1276) with the Wallsee Chapel (1343), with marvellous windows by M. Prachensky Wallsee, original architecture of the Austrian High Gothic period.
Lauriacum Museum: Former town hall. Shows Roman exhibits of international importance, and the only Roman ceiling fresco in Austria, “Amour and Psyche”. Prehistoric and ethnic studies collection. Ennsegg Castle: Getting wed like princes and princesses at Enns. The municipality of Enns has established its registrar’s office in Ennsegg Castle and thus offers every couple a really princely wedding. Couples may not only get married in the historic “picture” room, they may also marry in accordance with the rites of the church in the castle chapel. Furthermore, wonderful venues such as the “Georgenberger” room, the “Auersperg” room, the “Napoleon” room or the castle’s ancient vaults are available for the following celebrations.

The contemplative medieval town of the Dukes of Montfort nestles in the corner region where Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein meet. Galleried buildings, narrow alleyways, attractive shops, cafés, restaurants with gardens invite you to linger in one of the oldest cultural areas of Europe, which attracted numerous artists at the beginning of the last century. Traditions of Alemanisch folk culture, which add to the style of the romantic ambience of the lively little town, can be found at many festivities and celebrations

TOWN HISTORY
First documented in 842 as “Feldkirichun” in the “Rätischen Urbar” – an inventory of possessions. In 1218 appointed as a town, at roughly the same time as Count Hugo von Montfort had the Schattenburg – the emblem of Feldkirch – built. In the Middle Ages Appenzeller and Swabia fought over the town, and in 1390 the Habsburgs took command of Feldkirch. The former town of the Montforts has shown continuous growth since the turn of the last century, and the integration of surrounding villages has made Feldkirch into the district metropolis, between the historic past and the rhythms of present day life.

TOWN HISTORY
Gmunden was an important settlement as early as Celtic times and grew in the 11th century to become a significant centre of the salt trade. Due to its favourable climate and the beauty of the Salzkammergut landscape, the aristocracy and wealthy citizens took their summer holidays at the town on Lake Traun as early as the 19th century. Emperor Franz Josef for example, visited regularly, prior to his summer holidays in Bad Ischl the Royal House of Hanover, where the nobility from all over Europe stayed. A chapter of world history was written in Gmunden. Important treaties that changed the shape of Europe were concluded in the Kammerhof (then the only seat of the Hapsburgs in the Salzkammergut).

At the foot of the Bettelwurf lies hall in Tirol, with its narrow, winding streets and striking Baroque and Gothic town houses. TOWN HISTORY
Rock salt was mined in the Hall valley as long ago as the 13th century. A small fortification to protect the salt pans apparently developed into a larger settlement during the 13th century. In 1303 Archduke Otto von Kärnten-Tirol gave Hall its town charter. From then on, the town of Hall gained in economic significance through the three areas of salt mining, shipping on the River Inn and trading. In 1477 the first coin was minted in Hall, after which the currency system in use at the time made Hall the most important mint of its age. Today, Hall has more than 300 Gothic and Baroque old town houses, 7 churches and monasteries as well as countless Baroque and Gothic monuments.
Option of minting your own coins. Since 2008 the Europe room at the Hall Mint has been the home to the “Europe Taler” – the world’s largest silver coin! St. Nikolaus Parish Church: Foundation stone laid in 1281, with construction taking place quickly in the following years. Substantial expansion in 1430. The Gothic tower was replaced by a Baroque tower after the earthquake in 1670. Luxurious Baroque frescos by Adam Mölk. Of special interest: the “Waldauf Chapel” with a large collection of relics, and the “Waldauf Mother”, a carved figure by Michael Pacher. Mining Museum: A true to the original reproduction of the Halltal mine, which ceases operations in 1967. Tunnels, shafts, drilling machines (working) and a chute give the impression of really being underground.
But also sports fans will definitely get their money’s worth in Hall-Wattens because sporty highlights such as the Boulder World Cup, the Paragliding and Hang-Gliding World Cup at the “Alps Open”, the Porsche Karwendel Trophy or the Hall Tower Race are at home here.

“Mei Imscht” (My Imst) – the title of a poem by Jakob Kopp telling all about the little town in the highlands of Tyrol. 18 historic fountains with figures of the saints are as easy to find here as Gothic and Baroque churches and town houses, traditionally evolved customs and a sympathetic population with a sunny attitude to life. Modern Tyrolean way of life in a historic ambiance, at cafés, pubs and cultivated gastronomy, at the theatre or when shopping. The town today counts among the most lively district towns in Tyrol.

TOWN HISTORY
A settlement area since the Bronze Age, first mentioned in documents as “oppidum humiste” in 763, which means something like “bubbling spring”. Long in Bavarian possession, in 1266 Meinhard of Tyrol acquired the piece of land and awarded Imst the rights of market-town in 1282. Economic blossoming in the 15th and 16th centuries due to mining, trading and bird breeding, which went down into posterity through the “Bird Trader” by Carl Zeller. A great crisis and the fire of 1822 only allowed Imst to regain its powers after being raised to town status in 1898. An economic upswing and the beginning of tourism mark the appearance of Imst today.

The town of Judenburg, the Styrian market town for over 900 years, still glows today with the Mediterranean charm from the days of the Venetian traders. Tradition and modernity meet at all points in the lovingly cultivated Old Town. Among delightful town houses is enthroned the stone keeper of the town, the highest free-standing town tower (75.66m) in Austria. Rustic inns, restaurants, cafés and confectioners know how to indulge their guests. In the evening the “mature” bar culture in the town centre invites one to a cosy end to the day.

TOWN HISTORY
Prehistoric finds, such as the famous Strettweg cult chariot (600 B.C.), witness an ancient settlement and farming region. In 1103 “mercatus judenpurch” developed into the oldest Styrian trading settlement. Raised to town status in 1224, the trading settlement and heraldic town grew together in the 13th and 14th centuries and was enclosed by a town wall. The town’s symbol today, the four-storey, 75m-high town tower was first a watchtower in the town’s fortifications. In the 14th and 15th centuries Judenburg held important privileges (trading rights, monopoly for the bird’s eye and raw iron trade, minting of the Judenburg guilder) and achieved its blossoming period as the “capital of Upper Styria.”
ATTRACTIONS

With fascinating shows similar to Imax, experience the extraordinary here to awaken a fascination with the cosmos. The new glass panoramic lift is unique in the world: It leads directly through the belfry past
the gigantic bells. For the sporty visitor, the 270 steps are still in use too. Open all year round, www.sternenturm.at. Jesuit Monastery & Jesuit Church: Generously laid out early Baroque building with four wings and Gothic hall church (founded 1364). Liechtenstein Castle Ruins: Residence of Ulrich von Liechtenstein, one of the most famous Minnesänger. Parish Church: Baroque church with pilasters and lateral chapels. The varied stucco works are particularly fascinating. A treasure of art history is the life-sized limestone figure of the “Judenburg Madonna”, originating from 1420. Körbler House: Town house with charming inner courtyard. St. Magdalena Church: Glass paintings and frescos of European significance. Judenburg Town Museum: Extensive collections about the history and art history of the town.

TOWN HISTORY
First mentioned as “Coafstein” in the Bishop Arn of Salzburg’s list of properties. Described as a market-town in 1257 and raised to town status with a protective wall by Duke Stefan III of Bavaria in 1393. Relics of the town walls are the “Water Bastion” and the “Water Tower.” Numerous attacks were generally successfully rebuffed by the fortress. Only Emperor Maximilian I was able in 1504 to conquer the fortress defended by the Bavarian Hans von Pienzenau. And Andreas Hofer, the legendary Tyrolean freedom-fighter, was also unable to drive out the Bavarian occupants.

Southwards, to the mountains! The call of the mountains may be irresistible, with the Hohe Tauern and Dolomites national park being so close. Just a few minutes and you are at the foot of the mountains, where you can hike, climb and experience them for yourself. Choose between flowery alpine pastures or rugged cliffs, between mossy walks or stony paths. The feeling of being on one of the countless three thousand metre peaks is phenomenal – safely on the fixed rope route on a jagged rock face, introspective – looking across green meadows, sociable – over a cold beer in the shelter of a mountain hut – and all these things will definitely make you feel happy! And when you come back from the mountains, enjoy an Italian way of life and southern flair with cappuccino under the palm trees, amidst everyday summer life in the town of Lienz.

TOWN HISTORY
A lively settlement since the Bronze Age in the valley floor between the Drau and Isel rivers. Excavations of the Roman town of Aguntum (A.D. 50– 450). The original settlement was expanded by Count von Görz in the 11th and 12th centuries. Bruck Castle, the Carmelite monastery, was part of the building undertaken. The clerics were also active: five churches, two monasteries and a collection of remarkable art treasures are recorded. The Lienz Count Heinrich went down in posterity with his poems in the “Große manessische Liederhandschrift” as did the Lienz artists Albin Egger-Lienz and Franz von Defregger. The medieval town receives its guests in the heart of the Radstadt Tauern, on the sunny terrace of the Enns Valley. Lanes, squares, buildings - we find witnesses everywhere of a mature culture. Hospitality and traditions are cultivated by the local people, and guests are included. Together with traditional festivities, such as the Dumpling and Guard festivals, classical or modern listening pleasures are also an attraction. Between the town’s powers of attraction and the tranquillity of surrounding nature, a world of good is done for the soul, for those seeking recuperation and family holidaymakers.

TOWN HISTORY
“Rastat” was first mentioned in documents in 1074. Due to its strategically important location on the old Roman road from Aquileia over the Radstadt Tauern to Juvavum (Salzburg), Radstadt received town rights under Archbishop Rudolf von Hohenegg in 1289 and many privileges and much freedom. At the time of The Peasant Wars, the town under Michl Gaismair (1525 – 26) held out against siege by 5,000 peasants, and in 1527 received the great “Letter of Freedom” from Archbishop Matthäus Lang. Due to a decree of emigration, over 3,000 Protestants were obliged to leave the Radstadt district in 1731/32. After numerous occupations by Austrian, Bavarian and French troops, the town became an Austrian crown land with the Salzburg archbishopric in 1861.

Festival of Early Music and New Sounds
5 to 14 June 2009 ∙ Radstadt
For years, the Paul Hofhaimer Days have been one of the best-kept musical secres in the province of Salzburg. The concept: Young artists and new ensembles of local musicians and singers, a mix of early music and new sounds set in unusual venues, to bring life to the “old town in the mountains”. Programme highlights: »German Requiem« by Brahms, concerts by the Hofhaimer Orchestra Radstadt, Scarlatti’s »Stabat Mater« with the Company of Music and matinees in the nearby Höch Renaissance Palace. Contemporary locations complete the focus on Old Music.
Radstadt – cultural centre in the Salzburg mountains. Orchestral, choral and chamber music concerts and morning performances bring life to the “old town in the mountains”.

The smallest chartered town in Austria is famous as the “town of the storks and noble wine”. The picturesque ensemble of lovingly cared for citizens’ houses from the 16th – 19th century is surrounded on one side by the Rust hill-country vineyards and by Lake Neusiedl on the other. The decoration on the brightly coloured Baroque and Renaissance facades gives the town its unmistakable character. Romantic inns, wine taverns and restaurants indulge the guests. Time - what does it mean?

TOWN HISTORY
First mentioned in records in 1317 as Ceel – the Hungarian word for elm. First mentioned as Rust in 1385. Raised to market-town status in 1470. In 1524 the people of Rust received the right to burn a crowned “R” in their barrels from Queen Mary of Hungary, which ensured the town enormous tax advantages. The “R” is still used today as a cork mark. In 1681 the people of Rust purchased the freedom of the town from Emperor Leopold I (for 60,000 gold guilders and 30,000 litres of their best wine), which sealed the immediacy of the empire. Since that time the untouched medieval town – where the Turks were also unable to have great effect – is the smallest administrative district in Austria. Rust has been among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2001.

The enchantment of old portals and Baroque gables, quiet corners and lanes, the mighty and wide River Inn, meadows, fields and wooded green hills of the Sau Forest: a mature, unmistakeable atmosphere, which famous painters and writers were just as unable to resist as newcomers. The Baroque town shows itself today from its most blossoming side: weekday market, farmers’ market, flea market, attractive shopping, street cafés next to centuries old brewery inns – a melange with Guglhupf, country beer with liver cheese and an Emperor’s bread roll. A special atmosphere – irrespective of the season.

TOWN HISTORY
“Scardigna” was first mentioned in documents in 804. Schärding developed in the 9th and 10th centuries to become the centre of the county of Vornbach-Neuburg. The Counts of Andech followed in 1160 and the Bavarian Wittelsbachs in 1248. In its economic importance as a trading town on the River Inn, there was a great deal of early political activity and battles for the town. The Bavarian dukes, above all Ludwig the Bearded (in the 15th century), built Schärding into a strong fortification. The town suffered severe damage through extensive fires (in 1724 and 1779), and French occupation (1809). In 1779, and after the Napoleonic Wars in 1816, the Innviertel was again Austrian.
ATTRACTIONS
Upper Town Square with Silberzeile: Baroque fronted town houses in the medieval guild colours of the town. The pastel coloured facades of the houses go back to medieval times, and the colours allocated to the individual guilds (e.g. bakers blue, butchers red, innkeepers yellow and green). Linzer Tor: Double gate with battlement. Former upper tower of the town, which was inhabited by the tower keeper. Wassertor: Former inner tower known as the toll tower, with fresco in memorial of the shelling of the town in the War of Spanish Succession in 1703. Numerous high water marks indicate the flooding catastrophes.
Schlosstor: Former residence of the ducal protector of the castle, nowadays the town museum. Old Inn Bridge: with pillars dating from 1310 Castle Park with Fountain: Former fortress, the castle was almost completely destroyed by devastating fires in 1724 and 1775, and never rebuilt, and has been a park since 1895; the 26 m deep fountain carved from granite dates from the time the castle was built in 1225, but was only discovered and rebuilt in 2003. Baroque Garden Orangery: In 1884 Georg Wieninger lovingly erected a greenhouse on the old town wall with a house for the gardener, which was renovated in 2004 and now houses a restaurant amidst a magnificent park.

Renaissance buildings, such as the Porcia Palace, Goldeck, the people of Spittal’s local mountain, and the idyllically located Millstatt Lake entice one and all for an experience and relaxation. A stroll through the Old Town allows historical traces to be found at every turn. At the same time elegant, flippy or traditional shops, farmers’ markets, solid home-cooking, cosy cafés and pubs offer a social life by day and by night.

TOWN HISTORY
With the building of a hospital (Spittl) by the people of Ortenburg on one of the most important trade routes in Roman times, the foundation stone was laid for a blossoming town. In 1524 Gabriel von Salamanca, the Hapsburgs’ minister of finance, acquired the county of Ortenburg with all properties, and in 1533 had the most famous Renaissance palace built by Italian masters north of the Alps, Porcia Palace. Famous Hapsburgs often stayed in Spittal, including Hans Khevenhüller, the imperial ambassador at the Spanish court of Phillip II, and builder of the Khevenhüller town palace, as well as the palace built and named after the princes of Porcia who ruled and resided there from 1662 to 1918. The palace is now the property of Spittal and is used for cultural events.

TOWN HISTORY
Around 980 the Ottakar margraves in Styria built the “Stirapurhc“, the modern-day Lamberg Palace, at the confluence of the Rivers Enns und Steyr. A settlement grew up around the castle and the parish church, which was documented for the first time in 985. Wealth acquired from the iron trade enabled many Gothic houses to be built, which were then “modernized” during the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo periods. The town initially belonged to the Bavarians, and then in 1186 fell into the ownership of the Babenbergers. In 1287 Steyr was granted its town charter and extensive trading rights by Duke Albrecht I. An economic crisis brought about by fires in the town and other changes was resolved in 1864 by Josef Werndl’s mass production of rear-loading rifles, which made Steyr the “armourers of Europe”. The tradition of iron production continues today in automotive development and production. The history of the town is brought to life by a culinary tour to surprising locations with the Styrian night guard, or tours on modern Segway scooters.

The Upper Austrian town of Wels – called “Ovilava“ by the Romans – is the largest one, with approximately 60,000 inhabitants, in the group of “Small Historic Towns“. For already more than 2000 years the culture of life has been attended to in Wels. An especially delightful town, where life is worth living and the past, present and future merge harmonically together, has come into being. Life pulsates between sumptuous citizens' houses and modern purpose-built structures, romantic courtyards with arcades, posh pubs and elegant restaurants. The flair of the fair and shopping town of Wels is appreciated beyond regional borders. Approximately 650 specialised shops, lively pedestrian zones, street musicians and pub gardens as well as 200 cosy pubs and inns form the town’s profile.

TOWN HISTORY
The Illyrians and the Celts are the first proven folk groups. From 15 B.C. followed 500 years under Roman rule. “Ovilava” was founded under Emperor Hadrian and was 90,000 hectares in area, it had a four-kilometre town wall and a gigantic bordering territory. The Christianising of the people took place at the beginning of the 5th century, and in A.D. 600 the Bavarians moved in. The “castrum uueles” was first mentioned in records in 776. Raised to market-town status in 1215 by the Babenberg Leopold VI, and to the town of Wels in 1222. Rulers such as Rudolf IV and Duke Albrecht III marked the town’s appearance in the years following. Emperor Maximilian I died on 12.1.1519 at Wels Castle. At the end of the 16th century, and the beginning of the Counter Reformation, wealthy citizens left the town; the Peasant Wars and the Thirty Years’ War caused the economic demise of Wels. The inner part of the town was converted to the Baroque style in the 18th century. Building of the horse-drawn railway and numerous industrial endeavours took place in the first half of the 19th century. From 1948 Wels enjoyed an upswing and in 1964 the town was awarded the statute.

Marvellous views as far as the eye can see!
Whether you are driving across high mountains or through the steppes of Burgenland.
Right in the heart of Europe, drivers in convertibles, on motorcycles, in vintage cars and others, awaits an enchanting road par excellence – the “AUSTRIA CLASSIC TOUR”. Choose your special favourite route from more than 3,500 km of roads and discover the varied landscape of Austria: winding panoramic routes between high walls of snow over numerous alpine passes, romantic routes through the Salzkammergut or pleasant roads along the Danube through the Wachau. The Styrian wine road offers, together with wine taverns, gently rounded hills. Ancient little towns alternate with seemingly endless landscapes of meadows and woods, vineyards and mountain ranges. The “AUSTRIA CLASSIC TOUR” includes multifaceted routes for delightfully beautiful daily, weekend or weekly excursions in Austria. The “Crossing Austria in 12 Days” route, for example, leads you from the west – starting point Lake Constance – to the most eastern of the Austrian lowlands and to your destination at Lake Neusiedl. You will gather various impressions on your journey, become acquainted with friendly people and take home with you unforgettable views and experiences. The 18 “SMALL HISTORIC TOWNS” on your way invite you to rest, stroll and enjoy culture. Unmistakable architectural gems, all of which engender great sympathy and are easily seen. Rustic pubs, wine taverns and authentic inns can be found here as well as sophisticated gastronomy. Those who love freedom and enjoyment will find their very personal favourite hotel in all categories: romantic hotels for those in love, wellness hotels for those seeking recuperation, country hotels with a great deal of tradition and 30 biker hotels with comforts for the motorcyclist, safe parking and drying rooms for clothes. Whether you wish to enjoy just a part of the “AUSTRIA CLASSIC TOUR” on a weekend, or are crossing Austria over a longer period of time – choose your personal “dream road” on the “AUSTRIA CLASSIC TOUR” and enjoy it.

invites you!
Every year, one of Austria’s 18 Small Historic Towns hosts a festival of a special f hospitality and kind. In 2009, Feldkirch will host this festivity ofKuLtuR- & StadtLeben zest for life.
Feldkirch, the medieval town in the far west of Austria, is a town for epicures. Nestled between gentle hills it harmoniously combines the dynamic life of our time with the magic of history. With SeHenSweRteSinhabitants Feldkirch is Vorarlberg’s third biggest approx. 30,000 town and at the same time it is the oldest town in the »Ländle«, as Vorarlberg is called, with its medieval building style. Feldkirch was and still is a junction to which the splendid buildings and preserved medieval towers testify. The town is fascinatingly manifold: entertaining and lively at the Juggler Festival, at the Montfort Spectacle or at the most wellknown wine fair in western Austria, the Vinobile Montfort, or culturally sophisticated at the Feldkirch Festival. The charming town provides the most beautiful holiday path for each and everyone; be it on a walk in the midst of untouched nature, on a cycling tour in the near Rhine valley or on a shopping spree and stroll in Feldkirch’s old town. The gastronomical offer is also varied in Feldkirch. Whether you are looking for regional or international cuisine, everybody will find their favourite restaurant in the town of the Montfort Counts. Feldkirch is open – towards its neighbours in Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Germany and Tyrol. From here it’s only a few kilometres to Lake Constance, to Vaduz or to the natural Appenzell; a bit further and you will reach Innsbruck, Luzern or the Bavarian Royal Palaces. Colourful impressions that people enjoy reflecting on in Feldkirch, Vorarlberg’s gem. The next festival of the SMALL HISTORIC TOWNS will take place in JUDENBURG at the beginning of summer, in June 2010.
