Italian language evolution led to the emergence of several dialects. Most ancient Italian writers
preferred to write in their own dialects. The 14th Century, however, saw the distinguished
predominance of the Tuscan dialect. Tuscan in Italy was centrally placed and hence the engine of
commerce mostly in its important city named Florence. The Tuscan dialect closely resembles the
classical Latin phonology and morphology. Therefore, it is the key reason why the Latin culture
and Italian traditions closely harmonize with each other. The Florentine culture saw the birth of
three Italian artists namely Petrarca, Boccaccio and Dante Alleghieri. They expressed their
thoughts and feelings of the late middle Ages and early Renaissance. For instance, Dante

Alleghieri used his native Tuscan in his epic poems.
It was during the 15th and 16th centuries where grammarians emerged in an attempt to confer
upon the syntax, pronunciation and the vocabulary of the 14 th Century Tuscan. It was aimed at
establishing linguistic norms and codification of the language.

In the 19th Century, Tuscan became the national language in Italy. The educated spoke in Tuscan.
During the unification of Italy in 1861, Tuscan had a great impact on the political scene as well
as the social, economical and cultural transformation. Schooling became mandatory and hence
literacy levels increased. As a result, many speakers abandoned their native dialects in favor of
the national language.Pimsleur Italian
