Checking the parts of your essay
Have you got all your parts?
Directions: Read over your essay one last time. Make sure you
check for the following:
Parts of an Essay
Are there five paragraphs?
Does each paragraph have at least five sentences?
Does each paragraph have a topic sentence?
Is there a thesis statement in the first paragraph?
Does each paragraph have at least three supporting sentences?
Does each paragraph have a concluding sentence?
Is there an introduction paragraph?
Are there three supporting paragraphs for the body?
Is there a concluding paragraph?
Does my thesis clearly state my subject and the organization of my essay?
Does my body follow the organization established in the thesis statement?
Have I completed a spell check?
Did I check for subject-verb agreement?
Did I check for punctuation errors?
Have I added transition words and cohesive words and phrases?
Have I word processed my paper?
Is there a title that is centered on the first page?
Now that you have finished checking your parts, you can make sure that you have all of the
work that you’ve completed during this unit. Next, turn your portfolio into your teacher.
When the teacher has graded your paper, they will return it. You will use the editing rubric
to make any corrections that have been noted and turn it in again.
