1.0 Lift Pitch

Do you want your children to have a healthy start in life? I believe this is the

vision most parents have for their children. Most parents are busy with work

and don’t have time to think about making healthy meals. This is where my

website comes in handy. It will provide tips and information on how to make

healthy meals and snacks.

2.0 Summary

Being a parent myself it is very hard sometimes to know exactly what kind of

food you should and shouldn’t be giving your child. I believe that it would be

a good idea to create a website that will help parents make the right choices. I

plan on having different sections which might include, ideas for packed lunch,

healthy snacks, how to make healthy eating fun and healthy family meals.

Another section I would like to include would be a place for parents to leave

“tips” on how they provide healthy meals for their children.

I don’t just want parents to use this website, I am going to have two main

sections one for parents and one for children as I want to make healthy eating

fun for children. The website will be bright and colourful with a lot of graphics.

Children will be able to go on and “make their own cookbook”, they can insert

                                                                                     3
foods they like and it will turn it into a virtual cookbook. Parents can also find

a “pregnant” section; this will help new parents on what they should be eating

to provide nutrients to their unborn baby.

Also if you think your child is over or under weight you will be able to check

their BMI by inserting their height and weight into a table. A chart will be

available to let you know what the recommended weight it for your child at

their current age.

3.0 Research Outcomes

Throughout my research I have came across a lot of fresh and new ideas that I

had never thought about including in my project. I have now decided that I

am going to make printable sheets for children to colour in. I will create the

graphics myself and make it fun and enjoyable for the children. I want children

to enjoy healthy eating and by achieving this I need it to look fun. Another

idea that I am taking from my research is “meal planner”. I am going to create

blank meal planners for parents to print out and fill in themselves. But I will

also have ready-made meal planners which parents can use as a guide on

which foods to make each day.

I also thought that a lot of sites would have a BMI checker, but this wasn’t the

case. Only a few of the sites I had looked at included a BMI checker. I feel that

I should defiantly include it in my project, as it will help parents work out if

their child is over or under weight. This then means they can take action

                                                                                     4
weather or not they need to introduce different foods to achieve the

recommended weight for their age.

Recipes are a key aspect in this project, yes you can give advice s to what

foods you should be eating, but you should supply the recipe as well in case

they wish to make it. Every site I looked at had a recipe section, doesn’t

matter how big or small it was but it was there. I plan on looking through

cooking books and the Internet to find the best recipes to include in my

project. I of course will give these recipes a try; I can’t include them if I haven’t

made them myself.

Also found during my research that, yes there are a lot of sites similar to my

project but none of them seem to be designed very well. A lot of them

seemed “threw together”. Even the government healthy eating websites don’t

have much colour in them so they wouldn’t appeal to children very well. I

want my website to be colourful and energetic, so that is appeals to children

and adults of all ages. The graphics are going to be very bold so that they

stand out. Each graphic I make I will create a name to go along with the

graphic, e.g. Billy Broccoli.

I believe my research was successful in me making more decisions about my

own project. Research helped me decided what to include and what not to

include in my website. It also guided me to create something colourful and

fun, as that hasn’t been done much before. I would still like to do some more

                                                                                        5
research so that I can come up with a suitable name for my project. At the

minute I am calling it “Healthy Beginning” but I would like to change this.

3.1 Research Analysis

In this section I will evaluate on some websites, which I looked at that where

similar to the project I want to create. I searched www.google.co.uk to find

websites relating to my project, in which I found a number providing the

services I want to provide. The three below that I have decided to talk about

where my favourite out of the ones I looked at.

3.1.0 Nourish Interactive

I have looked through the Internet and found a number of projects similar to

mine. The first one I will talk

about is Nourish Interactive

(Maggie LaBarbera,

01/05/2005, The fun place to
learn about nutrition! [Nourish
Interactive],
[online].Available:http://www.nourishinteractive.com/kids)

This website looks at a number of different aspects of healthy eating. Like the

website I am willing to create it has different sections for, parents, teachers,

children and also colouring sheets to help children learn different fruit and

vegetables. This websites works well as it has everything you need to learn

about eating healthily.

                                                                                   6
I believe the websites has all the correct content but the design of the website

is poor. There are too many adverts and a lot to distract your eye on each

page. There is also a section that I never thought about which is for teachers,

it provides lesson plans for them to use in the classroom.

3.1.1 Net Mums

The next website I looked at is called www.netmums.com (Netmums, n.d., Kids and

food [Netmums], [online]. Available:http://www.netmums.com/) which is a website I

visit regularly. This website covers every aspect on parenting but the reason I want

to include it in my research is because they have a fantastic section on food. They

have lots of different sections including recipes, meal planner and party food.

Once you click into these sections you can then choose from cooking tips to

budget planning.

I love the layout of the

website as it is very modern

and colourful. The website

also provides “meal planners”

which I believe is a brilliant

idea, one in which I would

like to create for my own website. Another great idea this website has is ideas

for weaning, finger foods and toddler meals for younger children. It is very

hard to find the right foods to provide during the stages of weaning, a guide

that you could print of would be very helpful.

                                                                                       7
3.1.2 BBC – Its up to you

An educational website has been created

by the BBC (Unknown, n.d., Its up to you
                                           [BBC Schools], [online].
                                           Available:http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernirel
                                           and/schools/4_11/uptoyou/healthy/nutrient
facts.shtml) which has lots of interactive
activities for children. They have a
selection of flash animations that children
can watch about healthy eating and
exercise. This website is mainly aimed at children around the ages of 9-13 years old,
this is only a guess as it doesn’t state the target audience on the website. You are
able to go into “food facts” and pick between a selection including protein and
calcium and then give you facts on which foods are high in protein or calcium.

3.2 Target Market

I have a two different target audiences, first of all my main target audience

would be parents and parents-to-be. Parents have a responsibly to provide

their children with a healthy lifestyle as children cannot make that decision for

themselves. Parents will able to go onto my website and get information, tips

and lots more help on which foods they should be giving their children. I

don’t think I can put a limit on the age the children have to be for the parents

to give them advice. But the main age range would be 0-14 years old when

the parents still provide most of the food choices. Parents-to-be are very

                                                                                         8
important as well as you need to know which foods you should be eating

while pregnant and which foods might harm your baby.

My second target audience will be children, age range between 7-14 years old.

I am going to make fun printable worksheets the children can colour in and

learn at the same time. They can learn about different food groups, and how

to create easy meals or snacks.

3.3 Techniques/Technologies Used

This project will mainly be a website providing information on healthy eating

tips for parents, which children can access worksheets from. I want to create

the website in wordpress as it is a very successful content management

system.

I will need to use JavaScript to make the BMI checker work correctly. I hope to

find resources online to help me create this for my website. I will also use my

Bamboo fun graphics tablet to create all the graphics for my website. I want to

learn how to create very well structured graphics, and I hope this project can

help me with this skill.

4.0 Conclusion

I believe that this website will take up a lot of my time as it has a wide variety

of different sections. I want to create a fun, colourful and energetic website for

parents and children. It will provide a lot of healthy eating options and meal

                                                                                     9
planners, which you can download, and print out. I am hoping this will help

children to learn about different food choices. I am also going to make

parents aware of the risks different types of food will have on their children’s

health if they continue to eat it. I will include a BMI checker, so parents can

see if their children are over or under weight for their age. I feel that this site

will work really well in wordpress, this also means people can leave comments.

Parents will be able to leave tips and ideas so that other parents can discover

new recipes and lunch box ideas that other parents have actually used. I am

very excited about starting this project and feel that it could be a success. I

still need to come up with a suitable name for the project but I think that

while creating the project a name will come to mind.
