Solaris 8 Installation Checklist The Solaris 8 installation guide is available on the Solaris doc CD and on the web: http://docs.sun.com/ab2/coll.214.7/SPARCINFOLIB/@Ab2TocView?Ab2Lang=C&Ab2Enc=iso-8859-1 Pre-Installation Notes During Solaris installation, you will be prompted for a variety of information. To help the process go as smoothly as possible, please have this information ready beforehand. Hostname IP Address Subnet Mask DNS Server Packages _________________________ _________________________ _________________________ _________________________ _________________________ Additional Notes: Partitions (size and slice): swap _________________________ / _________________________ /usr _________________________ /var _________________________ /opt _________________________ /export _________________________ Starting the Installation - Put Solaris 8 Installation CD in the drive. - Reboot the server. - While booting up, press

This is the version of the OS with the most recent complete set of patches that have been tested together. You will still need to apply the most recent recommended patch bundle after installation. 1. 2. 3. _________________________ Specify OS Version (e.g., Solaris 8, 10/00). ___ Set swap space equal to the amount of physical memory. ___ Permit swap space to be placed at the beginning of the OS disk. NOTE: There is no inherent value in this, it just keeps you from having to know in advance the exact number of blocks the other filesystems will use. Once the mini-disk has been copied to the new swap partition, the machine will reboot and offer networking and basic host configuration options. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. ___ Networked? ___ Use DHCP? (choose no) _________________________ Assigned hostname. _________________________ Assigned IP address. ___ Enable IPv6? (choose no) ___ Configure Kerberos? (choose no) 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. _________ Name Service. (choose none) ___ Part of subnet? (choose yes) _________________________ Netmask. (255.255.255.0) _________________________ Assigned timezone. ___ Give a Root Password (don't write it in here). ___ Power Management? (choose no) ___ Power Management at Restart? (choose no) Solaris Software 1 CD Once the above questions have been answered, you will be prompted to insert the Solaris Software 1 of 2 CD. Once it is in the CD-ROM tray: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ Choose Custom Install. Choose appropriate region _______________ and locale _______________. Toggle all "Solaris 8 Documentation" choices Off. Toggle all "Solaris 8 Software 2 of 2" choices Off. Toggle all "Computer Systems Supplement CD" choices Off. Choose no additional software sources. Enable both 64-bit and 32-bit support. Choose "Core Solaris Software Group" (End User for development) File System Layout You should specify each of the following filesystems. Log below the size given to each and which slice corresponds to which filesystem. Remember that the Sun disk image limits you to seven partitions per disk (and one is already being used by swap). User files and home directories should maybe be kept on a separate disk or some attached storage device like a RAID array. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Size of / ___________ Slice ____________ Size of /opt ___________ Slice ____________ Size of /usr ___________ Slice ____________ Size of /var ___________ Slice ____________ Size of /export ___________ Slice ____________ ( ~1000 megs ) ( ~1000 megs ) ( ~2000 megs ) ( ~500 megs) (*) After the partitions are created and software installed, you will be asked to insert the "Solaris 8 Software 2 of 2" CD. Choose "skip". The system will request a reboot. Additional Packages There are additional packages not in the "Core Solaris Software Group" which you will want. This includes terminal information, system accounting utilities, Sun's NTP implementation, Berkeley-style binaries, the zlib compression library (for SSH), man pages and documentation. Insert the "Solaris 8 Software 1 of 2" CD and install packages. 1. ___ mkdir /mnt/cdrom 2. ___ mount /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s0 /mnt/cdrom 3. ___ cd /mnt/cdrom/s0/Solaris_8/Product 4. ___ pkgadd -d . SUNWntp* SUNWlibC SUNWdoc SUNWscpu (Say yes to all questions.) 5. ___ cd / 6. ___ umount /mnt/cdrom Then replace that CD with "Solaris 8 Software 2 of 2" CD and install packages. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. ___ mkdir /mnt/cdrom ___ mount /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s0 /mnt/cdrom ___ cd /mnt/cdrom/Solaris_8/Product ___ pkgadd -d . SUNWter SUNWacc* SUNWman SUNWbash SUNWless SUNWtcsh SUNWzlib (Say yes to all questions.) ___ cd / ___ umount /mnt/cdrom Sun Recommended Patch Cluster As mentioned above, the latest Solaris CD contains only the latest patches tested as a full set. There will undoubtedly be security and recommended patches for individual packages which have since been released. 1. 2. 3. 4. ___ Download ftp://sunsolve.sun.com/pub/patches/8_Recommended.zip. ___ Download ftp://sunsolve.sun.com/pub/patches/8_Recommended.README. ___ Read 8_Recommended.README for special instructions. ___ Unzip 8_Recommended.zip in a good spot and execute its install script. Some patches will not install; these are for packages which were not installed. Post Installation Additional Network Configuration 1. ___ Configure gateway: echo 10.1.0.1 > /etc/defaultrouter User Environment 1. ___ Make home directory: mkdir /export/home 2. ___ Change useradd defaults: useradd -D -b /export/home 3. ___ Modify /etc/default/su: SUPATH=usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/ccs/bin 4. ___ Modify /etc/profile: PS1="(`uname -n`)\$ " #prompt PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X/bin:/usr/ccs/bin VISUAL=/bin/vi export PS1 PATH VISUAL At this point, please proceed to the Solaris 8 Security Checklist. It is important to secure the server before allowing user access. Additional Software Installation After securing the server, you may install additional software if it is needed. Below are some common applications and utilities. Only install what is needed. Packages (http://www.sunfreeware.com): ___ Gzip current (1.3) - `pkgadd -d ./gzip-1_3` ___ Gcc 2.95 - `pkgadd -d ./gcc*` (generally a good idea not to install on public servers) Tarballs: ___ GNU Make current (3.76 - use /usr/ccs/bin/make when compiling) ___ Samba current ___ Perl current (5.60) ___ ___ ___ ___ Vnc 3.3.3 (must use /usr/ccs/bin/make when compiling) Apache current (1.3.x) ModSSL current (depends on apache version) Top current (3.5.x)
