Set up an equation and use it to solve the following problems.

1)    It takes Andrew 6 hours to paint a fence and E’boni 3 hours to paint the same fence. How
      long will it take if they do it together?




2)    Peter can mow the lawn in 40 minutes and John can mow the lawn in 60 minutes. How long
      will it take for them to mow the lawn together?




3)    Morgan can clean a house in 3 hours and Damaris can clean the same house in 5 hours. How
      long will it take them to clean the house if they work together?




4)    You paint 2 square yards of a community mural in 3 hours and a friend paints 4 square yards
      in 5 hours. How long does it take the two of you to paint 11 square yards when working
      together?




5)    You can wash one window in 15 minutes and your sister can wash one window in 20 minutes.
      How many minutes will it take to wash 12 windows if you work together?
Section 2: “Uniform Motion Type #1” Problems

Set up an equation and use it to solve the following problems.

6)    Hilary and Chelsea jog down Pennsylvania Ave. every day. Hilary jogs at 5 mph, and Chelsea
      jogs at 4 mph. Chelsea starts at noon, and Hilary starts at 12:30. At what time will Hilary
      overtake Chelsea? How far will they have jogged?




7)    A train left Columbus and traveled north at 75 km/h. Two hours later, another train left
      Columbus and traveled in the same direction at 100 km/h. How long did it take the second
      train to catch up to the first train?




8)    Carmen left a campsite on a trip down the river in a canoe, traveling at 6 km/h. Four hours
      later, Lexi set out after her in a motorboat. The motorboat traveled at 30 km/h. How long
      after Lexi started did she overtake the canoe?




9)    At 6:00am, the Skidmore family left for a vacation trip and drove south at an average speed of
      40 mi/h. Their friends, the Wittings, left two hours later and traveled the same route at an
      average speed of 55 mi/h. At what time could the Wittings expect to overtake the Skidmores?
