BIOGRAPHY:-

     RICHARD ROGERS WAS BORN IN FLORENCE,ITALY IN 1933.
     HE ATTENDED THE ARCHITECTURAL ASSOCIATION SCHOOL IN LONDON BEFORE GRADUATING
      FROM YALE UNIVERSITY IN 1962.
     AT YALE HE MET FELLOW STUDENT, NORMAN FOSTER AND SET UP ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE
      AS TEAM 4 WITH FOSTER AND THEIR RESPECTIVE WIVES.
     IN 1970,ROGERS ESTABLISHED A PARTNERSHIP WITH ITALIAN ARCHTECT, RENZO PIANO.
     LATER RICHARD ROGERS PARTNERSHIP WAS FORMED.

PHILOSOOHY AND WORK STYLE:-

     ROGERS IS NOTED FOR HIS MORDERNIST AND FUNCTIONALIST DESIGNS.
     IN CONTRAST TO FOSTER,WHO GENERATED A SOPHISTICATED ARCHITECTURE BASED IN
      TECHNOLOGY,ROGERS CREATED LAVISH,ENTHUSIASTIC DESIGNS.
     HIS WORKS REJECT THE CLASSICAL PAST,WHILE ENTHUSIASTICALLY EMBRACING A
      TECHNOLOGICAL FUTURE WITH ITS ACCOMPANYING AESTHETIC.
     ALTHOUGH HE PLACES EMPHASIS ON TECHNOLOGY,HE BELIEVES THAT IT CANNOT BE AN END
      IN ITSELF,BUT MUST ATTEMPT TO SOLVE EXISTING SOCIAL AND ECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS.
     HIS CONCERN WITH TOTAL FLEXIBILITY AND OBVIOUS TECHNICAL IMAGINARY HAS BEEN
      TERMED AS LATE MODERN.

CENTRE POMPIDOU PARIS:-

     ROGERS JOINED RENZO PIANO WINNING THE DESIGN FOR THE POMPIDOU CENTRE IN 1971.
     THE SITE FOR THE CENTRE POMPIDOU IS LOCATED IN THE CENTRE OF PARIS, WITHIN 1 KM OF
      NOTRE DAM CATHEDRAL AND THE LOUVRE MUSEUM.
     THE POMPIDOU CENTRE WAS PLANNED AS A KEY CONNECTION IN THE RENEWAL OF THE
      HISTORIC HEART OF THE CAPITAL.
     THE CENTRE POMPIDOU BROUGHT TOGETHER THE THEMES:
             1. SKIN AND STRUCTURE
             2. TECHNOLOGY AND FLEXIBILITY
            3. MOVEMENT AND ANTI-MONUMENTALISM


     THIS BUILDING ESTABLISHED ROGER’S CHARACTERISTIC STYLE IN WHICH MOST OF THE
      BUILDING SERVICES (WATER, HEATING DUCTS AND STAIRS) WERE EXPOSED ON THE EXTERIOR
      TO LEAVE UNCLUTTERED INTERNAL SPACES.

DESIGN CONCEPT:-

     THE DESIGN EXPRESSES THE BELIEF THAT BUILDINGS SHOULD BE ABLE TO CHANGE TO ALLOW
      PEOPLE THE FREEDOM TO ADJUST THEIR ENVIRONMENT AS THEY NEED.
     IN ADDITION,THE ORDER,GRAIN AND SCALE SHOULD BE DERIVED FROM THE PROCESS OF
      MAKING THE BUILDING SO THAT EACH INDIVIDUAL ELEMENT IS EXPRESSED WITHIN THE
      WHOLE.
     AS A RESULT,THE BUILDING BECOMES A TRUE EXPRESSION OF ITS PURPOSE.


FACILITIES PROVIDED:-

     THE ENTRANCE OF THE BUILDING IS AT THE LEVEL OF THE STREET AND THE PIAZZA AND
      RELATES TO THE LIFE OF BOTH.
     ALTERNATIVE ACCESS IS VIA LIFTS,ESCALATORS AND STAIRCASES ATTACHED TO THE WEST
      FAÇADE.
     EACH OF THE 5 MAJOR FLOORS ARE UNINTERRUPTED BY STRUCTURE,SERVICES OR
      CIRCULATION.
     THE CORRIDORS,DUCTS,FIRE STAIRS, ESCALATORS,LIFTS,COLUMS AND BRACING WHICH
      WOULD ORDINARILY INTERRUPT THE FLOORS ARE EXPOSED ON THE EXTERIOR.
     MOVEMENT WAS TO BE CELEBRATED THROUGH OUT THE BUILDING, AND EXPRESSED
      OVERTLY IN THE GREAT DIAGONAL STAIRCASE, RUNNING UP ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE
      BUILDING
     GIVING A SPECTACULAR VIEW OVER PARIS. THE TRANSPARENCY OF THE FAÇADE, THE
      GALLERIES AND THE ESCALATORS SNEAKING THEIR WAY UP THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING
      COMBINE TO REVEAL 2 CAPTIVATING SIGHTS-THE TILED ROOFS AND MEDIEVAL GRAIN OF
      PARIS IN ONE DIRECTION,AND THE REVELATIONOF THE BUILDING-A FLEXIBLE,FUNCTIONAL ,
      TRANSPARENT ,INSIDE-OUT MECHANISM.

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM:-

     THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM IS A BRACED AND EXPOSED STEEL SUPERSTRUCTURE WITH
      REINFORCED CONCRETE FLOORS.
     EXTERNAL SERVICES GIVE SCALE AND DETAIL TO THE FACADES.
     WHILE THE CELEBRATION OF MOVEMENT AND ACCESS IS PROVIDED BY LIFTS AND
      ESCALATORSWHICH,LIKE THE SERVICES,ARE PLACED OUTSIDE THE BUILDING ENVELOPE.
     THE DECISION TO PLACE STRUCTURE AND SERVICES ON THE EXTERIOR WAS DRIVEN
      PRIMARILY BY THE NEED FOR INTENAL FLEXIBILITY,THE SCHEME PROVIDED HUGE EXPANSES
      OF UNINTERRUPTED SPACE ON OPEN FLOORS.
