This year commencement ceremonies will be held on Wednesday, May 18. Below is
some information on University and Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and
Preservation activities that day. Please note that tickets for all the different
commencement activities described below will be distributed at one time from the Dean's
Office (402 Avery Hall) and students will be notified by email when they are available.
Academic attire is required for the University Commencement Ceremony and strongly
recommended for the School Ceremony. Students can purchase gowns at the Columbia
University Bookstore (in the basement of Lerner Student Center, entrance on Broadway
at 115th Street). Detailed information can be found at:
University Commencement Ceremony
This ceremony will begin at 10:30 am on Wednesday, May 18, and will be held on the
plaza in front of Low Memorial Library. The procession for the ceremony will begin at
9:30 a.m. after the chapel bells ring. Graduating students should begin assembling by the
North West side of Low Library by Mathematics Lawn at approximately 9:00 a.m.
Graduating students must stop by the Dean's Office, 402 Avery Hall, to pick up tickets
for their guests to attend the ceremony (students will be notified by email when the
tickets are available). Each student may receive a maximum of four tickets. Graduating
students do not need a ticket for themselves. Information on the University Ceremony is

School Commencement Ceremony
The School's commencement activities will immediately follow the University-wide
Commencement Ceremony. From 12:15 pm to 3 pm, the School will host a buffet
luncheon for graduating students and their guests in the courtyard between Avery and
Fayerweather. Tickets for the luncheon will be available in the Dean's Office, 402 Avery
Hall (students will be notified by email when the tickets are available). Graduating
students may receive up to four guest tickets for the luncheon. The School ceremonies
will be broadcast onto screens in the courtyard during the luncheon.
During this period the School's commencement ceremonies, at which diplomas and
awards will be given, will take place in St. Paul's Chapel according to the following
The ceremony for Second Professional Degree recipients (AAD, CCCP, UD) will take
place at 12:15 pm. Special Students pursuing advanced architectural research are also
invited to attend this ceremony. Second Professional Degree recipients should assemble
in the chapel by 12:15 pm and plan to attend the luncheon following the conclusion of
this ceremony at approximately 1:45 pm. Students will be assigned seats in the front rows
of the chapel. Tickets for the School ceremony will be available in the Dean's Office, 402
Avery Hall (students will be notified by email when we have them). Each student
graduating in this ceremony will be issued a ticket and may request a total of four guest
tickets: two for seating inside the chapel and two for seating in front of the chapel in a
tented area to which the ceremony will be broadcast. Students are encouraged to pick up
only as many tickets as they have guests attending the ceremony.
The ceremony for First Professional Degree recipients (M.Arch., UP, HP) will take
place at 1:45 pm. First Professional Degree recipients should plan to attend the luncheon
at 12:15 and assemble in the chapel by1:45 pm for the ceremony. Students will be
assigned seats in the front rows of the chapel. Tickets for the School ceremony will be
available in the Dean's Office, 402 Avery Hall (students will be notified by email when
we have them). Each student graduating in this ceremony will be issued a ticket and may
request a total of four guest tickets: two for seating inside the chapel and two for seating
in front of the chapel in a tented area to which the ceremony will be broadcast. Students
are encouraged to pick up only as many tickets as they have guests attending the
The ceremony for Real Estate Development Degree recipients will take place at 5 pm.
Graduates and their guests are invited to attend a luncheon in Avery courtyard, following
the University Commencement at approximately 12:15pm. A reception for the RED
graduate will be held at the Faculty House following the School’s Commencement at
6:45 pm. Each student graduating in this ceremony will be issued a ticket and may
request a total of four guest tickets.
Please note that a professional photography firm will be present at the ceremonies. Each
graduate will have the opportunity to purchase photos of the ceremony; a photograph of
each graduate receiving his or her diploma will be taken. Information will be sent by the
firm, Island Photography, to students' home addresses.
Dessert and coffee will be served in the courtyard following the conclusion of the First
Professional Degree Ceremony.
Please be reminded that all students planning to graduate in May from the Master of
Architecture, Advanced Architectural Design, or Architecture and Urban Design
programs must submit a portfolio of representative work from each semester of studio in
order to graduate. Students planning to continue as special students pursuing advanced
architectural research are included in this group.
Portfolios must be received by Margel Nusbaumer in the Dean's Office (402 Avery
Hall) by Wednesday, May 11th at 10 am. Portfolios will be used both for the final
overview and to assist the Faculty Awards Committee in determining the recipients of the
various design prizes awarded at Commencement.
End of Year Show
An exhibition of selected student work will open on Saturday, May 14th at 6 pm and will
be on view in the galleries of Buell Hall and Avery Hall until Friday, May 27th.
Information, guidelines, and maps with space assignments will be posted on the GSAPP
website as soon as they are available. Students whose work is included in the exhibition
must make plans to claim it between Monday, May 23rd and Friday, May 27th. We have
no facilities for storage of work over the summer, and the School cannot be responsible
for work left after May 27th.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the School's graduation and other end of year
All students, faculty, and staff should remember to carry their University ID Card
on Commencement Day, as it will be required for admission to the campus.
