					                                 Welcome to
                 Scholarship Resources for Diverse Populations!

Compiled by Valerie Garr, valerie-garr@uiow.edu The University of Iowa
                                        (Updated July 2011)

NOTE:This is an evolving list of potential scholarship resources for students who are
one of or in combination of the following: minority, underrepresented, first generation,
                        female, disabled, undocumented, or GLBT.
This list includes scholarship and financial aid resource information from sources
predominantly not connected to the University of Iowa.

Thus, unless noted, the University of Iowa does not determine award criteria, dollar
amounts, application procedures, deadlines, or future renewal. This scholarship
information may be helpful in assisting prospective and current students with their
pursuit to finance a college education.

The websites listed are checked for authenticity annually but the UI is not responsible for
updating any of these websites unless they are official UI links. If you encounter a non-
working link, try googling the scholarship title/heading,

. It is recommended that you use this listing as a supplement to filing the FAFSA.

Tips for Getting Scholarships and Other Financial Aid:
 Work hard to get and maintain good grades
 Perform as well as you can on your ACT/SAT/GRE or other entrance exam
 Start early looking for scholarship money: internet, library, your community, department
        etc...
 If a scholarship requires a letter of recommendation, ask your teacher, professor, or
counselor/advisor—someone who knows your academic abilities in the classroom
 If a scholarship requires you to write an essay, have a teacher or counselor/advisor read
your essay before you submit it or use the Writing Lab to assist you
 Read the forms, applications, and deadlines carefully and follow instructions as indicated
 File your FAFSA electronically as soon as possible after January 1st.
 Complete a FAFSA each year that you are in college and follow through on submitting
all of the required documents for financial aid; seek filing help from the financial aid
office if you are unsure about how and what forms to file
 Ask questions when you are unsure and pay attention to the timing of your applications

Tips To Protect Yourself From Scholarship Scams:
http://www.finaid.org/scholarships/scams.phtml

1. If you must pay money to get money, it might be a scam, unless purchasing a book on
   scholarships or aid
2. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
3. Spend the time, not the money, looking for scholarships
4. Never invest more than a postage stamp to get information about scholarships
5. No one can guarantee that you will win a scholarship

                                                                                               1
