1. What changes of government did New Jersey go
through in 1665 and 1702?
In 1665, New Jersey split from New York and became
a separate proprietary colony. In 1702, it received a
new charter as a royal colony.
2. What was life like for those living in the
Families usually lived on isolated farms. They often
did not legally own the land they lived on. Few
people had servants or enslaved people to help
them. Women and girls worked in the field with men
and boys. People in the backcountry did not think
the government cared about them.
3. Describe a Spanish colonial pueblo.
A pueblo was a civilian town. Pueblos were centers
for farming and trade. In the middle of the town was
a public square called a plaza, where people came to
do business or to attend church. The church, some
shops, and homes lined the four sides of the plaza.
