CITY OF ARTESIA BEAUTIFICATION & MAINTENANCE COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING January 17, 2008 6:30 p.m. Chairperson Karen Speers called the regular meeting of the Beautification and Maintenance Commission to order at 6:30 p.m., January 17, 2008, at Artesia City Hall, located at 18747 Clarkdale Avenue, Artesia. Commissioner Joyce Yeutter led the Pledge of Allegiance. ROLL CALL PRESENT: Chairperson Karen Speers Vice Chairperson Barbara Applebury Commissioner Joyce Yeutter ABSENT: Commissioner Tony Martins Commissioner Miguel Navarro ALSO PRESENT: Ed Leon, Public Works Superintendent Miriam Jimenez, Office Specialist Amended Agenda for this meeting was accepted without objection based on the unanimous vote from all the commissioners present. 4. COMMUNICATION FROM THE AUDIENCE Chairperson Karen Speers announced this was the time for communications from the audience and invited those wishing to speak to come forward at this time. There were no speakers at this time. 5. Approval of the Beautification and Maintenance Commission Minutes of November 15, 2007 and December 13, 2007. Minutes for the November 15, 2007 was approved with amendment on Item No. 5. It should read: “Movieland Wax Museum” instead of “Hollywood” upon motion by Commissioner Speers second by Commissioner Yeutter. The Commission approved the regular meeting minutes of December 13, 2007 as presented upon motion by Commissioner Yeutter second by Commissioner Applebury. 1 6. OTHER BUSINESS a. Public Works Update Public Works Superintendent Ed Leon presented the commission with an overview of the activities performed by the Department for the months of November and December. b. Vine Planting Program Update This item will be continued when staff is ready to present locations for vine planting. Public Works Superintendent Ed Leon reported that the vines on Gridley need to be replanted. c. Holiday Home Decorating Contest The Commission aims to work for more publicity and advertisement for the 2008 Holiday Home Decorating Contest and expressed their thanks to Andrew Perry for a great article informing everyone of this Contest via the Artesian. This item will be continued at the next regular meeting in July 2008. d. Goal Setting This is a continued item wherein staff was directed to research other cities on how they handle color pallets for commercial buildings and if they have any existing ordinance on this. e. Curb Addressing Program The Commission approved the proposal of Canning Hunger for curb address painting at no charge to the City or residents upon motion by Commissioner Yeutter second by Commission Applebury. This item will be presented to the City Council for approval. 7. STAFF REPORTS a. Capital Improvement Projects Update The commission was provided with an overview of the Capital Improvements for the months of November and December. b. Citywide Construction Projects Update The commission was provided with an overview of the Citywide Construction Projects for the months of November and December. 2 8. COMMISSION REPORTS Commissioner Applebury wanted to know what the white stands on South Street are for. These stands are by Martel’s Cleaners. Commissioner Speers informed her that these are for water testing. Commissioner Yeutter reported that the residents who live next to the old firehouse are feeding the pigeons and are therefore making a mess. 9. ADJOURNMENT The Beautification and Maintenance Commission meeting was adjourned at 7:12 p.m. to the regular meeting on March 20, 2008.
