Drawing Lewis Structures - PowerPoint
Document Sample

Drawing Lewis Structures
Drawing Molecules
• Lewis Dot Structures show the valence
electrons in each atom
– These structures will show how each atom in a
molecule shares electrons
Drawing Molecules
• Draw the Lewis Structure for:
H
C
P
O
F
Cl
Drawing Molecules
• Always include unshared pairs of electrons
• A long dash (-) signifies a single pair of shared
electrons
– This is a single bond
• Be sure to check for full octets (full valence shell)
• A double long dash (=) signifies a double bond
• A triple long dash (=) signifies a triple bond
Drawing Molecules
• Draw the following molecules
HCl
F2
H2O
CH4
NCl3
O2
Drawing Molecules
• Resonance structures show molecules that
cannot be represented by a single Lewis
structure
– Some examples are ozone (O3) and nitrogen
dioxide (NO2)
Drawing Molecules
• When drawing the Lewis structure for
polyatomic ions, do not forget to count the
electrons!
– What does it mean to have a negative charge, or
positive charge?
