2012-2013Greensburg Pirates Wrestling
Vision Statement: “Commitment”
Mission Statement: The Greensburg Wrestling Program is committed to maximizing our
student-athlete’s potential on and off the mat. Our focus will be to mold character,
academic achievement, strength development, conditioning, mental toughness, technique,
and teamwork. We will strive to become a powerful program that demands respect on
and off the mat.
GOALS:
1. Have fun.
2. Do everything we can (legally, ethically, and morally) to be the best.
3. Represent Greensburg as best we can.
4. Have individuals reach their goals.
5. Compete for team championships.
PHILOSOPHY:
We will work to teach techniques, discipline, sportsmanship, and a good work ethic. I
believe in an aggressive and attacking style of wrestling. We will focus on being
aggressive and attacking in the neutral position, mobile and explosive from the bottom
position and will work to pin our opponents when we are on top. This style of wrestling
is exciting and demands excellent conditioning because we will constantly be moving
forward to defeat our opponent.

PARENTAL SUPPORT
1. Remain positive with your son. Wrestling is a demanding sport and our athletes
need positive reinforcement.
2. Encourage a proper diet. Weight management is an aspect of our sport. The
wrestlers need to make sure they have a proper diet. Their health and welfare of
our children is the most important thing to us. Weight management will be
addressed later in this bulletin.
3. Establish a food table for Saturday tournaments. Tournaments are long days.
Having food for athletes will enable them to have a proper diet on these days and
serves to build a stronger “team” atmosphere with the wrestling families.
4. Join the Booster club. These monies help support GHS athletics.
5. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and MyBigCampus

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
TEAM POLICIES:
Players will be expected to abide by the following policies and team rules:
1. Do nothing that would embarrass the team or one’s teammates.
2. Adhere to all Indiana High School Athletic Association policies as well as the
specific standards of the wrestling program.
3. Attend class and do your best in school.
4. Be on time for practices and meets.
5. Communicate directly with coaches regarding practice or meet conflicts.
*Consequences not related to Greensburg High School policies will be dealt with on a
one on one basis.
6. Athletes are not released to their spring sport until granted permission by Coach
Cochran. Failure to follow this will disqualify the athlete from end of season honors
(including receiving a letter).
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE:
1.) A student must attend a minimum of the second one-half of the school day in
order to participate in an athletic practice or participation. On the 8 block
schedule, a student must arrive at school by the start of the 5th or 6th block class to
constitute one-half attendance and be eligible to participate.
2.) A student who leaves school for illness before the conclusion of the school day
is not eligible to participate in an athletic practice or contest.
3.) Allowable exceptions to the attendance rule are as follows:
A. Attendance at a funeral where the parent attests to the time missed.
B. A medical appointment which is accompanied by a signed doctor’s slip
C. Participation as a political page or a poll worker-documentation required
D. College visit day participation-proper documentation required
E. Military requirements based on service membership.
INJURY PROCEDURE:
If an injury occurs during practice or during a meet, a coach will make an effort
to contact you. If it is an emergency and we cannot contact you, we will get your
son to a doctor if you consent. A trainer is present at meets and tournaments. The trainer
will treat non-emergency situations.
All injured wrestlers will dress for practice and games unless the trainer and head
coach decide it is not practical.
IN CASE OF ILLNESS:
Please contact Matt Cochran at 812-663-7523 or mcochran@greensburg.k12.in.us if
you cannot attend school.
SKIN CARE:
1. Keep an eye out for abnormal skin issues. Contact Coach Cochran if there
is anything suspicious. A coach will examine each wrestler after practice for
skin issues.

have meets. We will have practices during the holidays from 9-11 (*see calendar).
1. A wrestler must be at practice unless he is not in school or is excused by the Head
Coach.
2. A wrestler must abide by the school attendance policy in order to practice or to

4.Any missed practices will result in extra-conditioning after the next practice. We must
make up the conditioning lost.
*Wrestling is a sport that demands excellent conditioning. All absences
(excused or unexcused) will result in extra conditioning. This is not
punishment. Unexcused absences will receive extra as punishment.
5. Unexcused absences from practice WILL NOT be tolerated. The third
unexcused/unaccounted for absent will result from dismissal from the team.
You must contact Coach Cochran BEFORE practice if you are going to miss for
any reason.
LETTERING POLICY
A letter will be awarded to every varsity wrestler who competed in 1/3 of the Varsity
Events.
WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
Some wrestlers choose to lose weight during a wrestling season to compete at a
lower weight class. The coaching staff will not encourage wrestlers to drop
weight classes. If a wrestler chooses to lose weight, the coaches will monitor the
weight loss to ensure the athlete’s safety. Here are some tips on weight
management:
1. Eat three meals a day. Many people will try to lose weight by not eating.
This will not work in the long-run. Eating balanced meals with proper
portions will help establish a safe weight loss program. Breakfast is the most
important meal, especially in a weight loss program.
2. Avoid eating after 7 PM.
3. Drink healthy fluids. Water, Gatorade, orange juice, and other healthy drinks
will ease the temptations of snacking.
4. Eat healthy foods. Avoid fried and fatty foods. Chicken, fish, and turkey are
healthy foods that will provide protein to the diet.
