DESCRIPTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS PROGRAM:
Year of Founding: 2000
Narrative: CAHR was founded in 2000 as a result of a contribution by an anonymous
donor. An interdisciplinary endeavor, The Center has a dual mandate of sponsoring the
creation of human rights courses throughout the colleges and departments of FSU and of
sponsoring FSU students for human rights internships both at home and abroad. To date
the Center has sponsored 45+ human rights courses (of which approximately 12-15 are
offered annually). The Center also funds several dozen students annually to work with
human rights NGOs around the world. In addition, the Center litigates pro bono asylum,
Torture Convention, human trafficking, and VAWA cases nationwide. Executive
Director Terry Coonan, Senior Scholar Barney Twiss, and FSU Religious Studies
Professor John Kelsay serve as the Series Editors for the new Advancing Human Rights
Book Series of Georgetown University Press.
