					                                     Cell Division


o Organisms grow larger by producing new cells.

o Even when an organism stops growing, new cells are constantly being produced to
  replace ones that die or wear out.

o Cells reproduce by dividing – a process called cell division or mitosis.

o Before a cell divides, DNA must be copied so that each of the 2 daughter cells
  produced has its own complete set of the instructions contained in the DNA. (In a
  human, DNA replication occurs about 70 million times per day!)

o After DNA replication (copying), the DNA strands supercoil and form
  chromosomes:
