JOB DESCRIPTION
Literacy & Numeracy Tutor
POST REF: 27754
LOCATION OF THE POST WITH THE COLLEGE STRUCTURE:
The post holder will be a member of the Student Services Directorate, predominantly based
at the Dewsbury and Huddersfield Centres.
REPORTS TO:
Curriculum Team Leader for Curriculum Support.
FUNCTIONAL LINKS WITH:
Internal:
1) Course Coordinators within the School
2) Other colleagues within curriculum areas
External:
1) Students’ parents/carers
OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE POST:
1) To undertake literacy/numeracy support to students on vocational programmes.
2) To contribute fully to the activities of the support team and any other working groups of
which he/she is a member.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
In the first instance, your duties and responsibilities are as listed below. As the needs of the
College change, you will be expected to take on or drop responsibilities as directed by the
Curriculum Team Leader for Curriculum Support.
Teaching and Other Duties:
1) To prepare and undertake a weekly teaching load in accordance with conditions of
service, mostly on the main site, but also, when required, at associated teaching bases.
2) To liaise with the Curriculum Support Co-ordinator and with course tutors to establish an
effective system of support.
3) To carry out necessary guidance and support for students as a result of assessment,
self-referral or tutor request.
4) To undertake monitoring and evaluation of own support. To keep the Curriculum
Support Co-ordinator informed on a regular basis.
5) To maintain accurate record keeping of all support in accordance with already
established practice and guidelines.
6) To contribute to one’s own staff development, including agreed appraisal schemes.
7) To contribute towards good order of the college, including student discipline both inside
and outside the classroom.
8) To attend enrolment sessions, advisory evenings and other college activities as
reasonably required.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The post holder is required to:
1) Perform his/her duties in accordance with the College’s Equality Policy, undertaking
mandatory training as required by the College.
2) Show a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young
people and vulnerable adults, undertaking mandatory training as required by the
College.
3) Demonstrate a commitment to the College’s values and behaviours of Excellence,
Integrity, Equality, Respect, Care, Efficiency and Innovation.
4) Ensure the health and safety of all students, staff and resources within his/her area(s) of
responsibility, i.e. delegated responsibility in relation to the nature of the post holder’s
duties and personal responsibilities as per Sections 7 and 8 of the Health and Safety at
Work Act 1974.
5) Participate in the College’s Performance Management Review Scheme, including the
Lesson Observation process.
6) Ensure that teaching and learning is at a high standard in line with OFSTED criteria, and
that he/she is committed to making any improvements necessary to raise the standard
of their teaching and learning.
7) Undertake Continuous Professional Development (CPD) relevant to his/her post.
8) Demonstrate commitment to the College’s whole organisational approach to improving
standards of literacy, numeracy and language in line with the national Skills for Life
Strategy and the College’s in-house Skill Up programme.
9) Perform any other duties as may be reasonably required from time to time by the
Principal and Chief Executive, through the Subject Sector Leader/Curriculum Team
Leader.
SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE POST:
As a member of the School of Student Services the post holder will work in an environment
of constant change and pressure where an amount of personal decision-making and
judgement is required.
The post holder must have the ability to work with a wide range of people of all ages from
very different backgrounds with very different needs and to respond accordingly to support
those needs.
The post holder will be required to adhere to a dress code as directed by the Head of School.

Salary
The salary for this post will be to a point within the range MGL A23-A33 of the pay scales for
Lecturers, which is the range £16,229 - £21,824 per annum. Starting salary will depend on
the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience.
Conditions of Appointment
Appointment will be to a contract with Kirklees College working to Academic Staff terms and
conditions of service under the following main provisions:
Working Week: The normal average working week will be
25.9 hours, which will fall over 4 days.
There may be occasions when you will be

Teaching Hours: You will be required to deliver an annual
teaching load of 579 hours.
