The College Greens 2012 Swim Team Handbook

Welcome to the 2012 swim season for the College Greens Gator Swim Team. We
are one of eight teams within the Suburban Swim League. The Green
Machine/Gators has existed for over 45 years as an integral part of the College
Greens Swim and Racquet Club. We are looking forward to a happy, healthy, fun,
and successful season with all the swimmers and their families, old and new.
                             Team Communication

Our main methods of team communication are e-mail and postings to our team
website. During the season, newsletters, bulletins and announcements are sent out
via e-mail and postings to the website. Our team website is
www.leaguelineup.com/collegegreens.

Each family should check their family folder for swimmer ribbons and other
information pertaining specifically to their family. The coaches will make
themselves available to speak with parents, but remember that they must focus on
the swimmers in the pool during practice and swim meets. Please be considerate
when approaching coaches on deck.

dryland at their scheduled practice time. Come dressed in workout apparel (swim
suit underneath) and shoes and socks.

RULES FOR PARENTS AND SWIMMERS

1. Be ready to get in the water at swimmer’s group practice time. If a swimmer is
more than 10 minutes late, it may result in the swimmer not practicing that day.
2. Please let the coach know if a swimmer needs to leave practice early.
3. Swimmers should always listen when the Coach is talking.
NOTE: Swimmers are expected to pay attention and participate in practice.
Behavior that is distracting or bothersome to other swimmers is not
acceptable. The coach will decide on the appropriate discipline.
4. Parents are expected to pick-up swimmers promptly at the end of the swimmer’s
practice session.
5. Parents needing to stay for the practice must stay off the pool deck and refrain
from talking to the Coaches or swimmers during the session.
6. Any parents with other children not participating in the swim practice are fully
responsible for supervising their children.
New Swimmers and Returning Assisted Swimmers: Our Little Gators program, an
integral part of our team, is for younger siblings of swim team members who need
assistance in the water. All new swimmers ages 7 and under and members of the
2011 Little Gators must attend a water safety assessment on Sunday, April 29th
from 9 a.m. – 12 noon. The purpose of this evaluation is to ensure that the
swimmer is water safe and to demonstrate skill level. To participate in the Little
Gators program, the swimmer must demonstrate that they can enter the pool,
come up to the surface and return to the side. Graduation from the Little Gators
program to the 6 and under swim team practice is the coach’s decision.
Little Gators: The 2012 Little Gators will begin practice on Monday, May 7th. The
Little Gators begin practice one week after the rest of the team to ensure their
safety in and around the pool. The Little Gators program is not intended as a
substitute for swim lessons. The Little Gators may participate in all home meets
including the Green & Gold meet and the four home dual meets hosted at our pool.

                             TEAM SWIM SUITS

Team suits are strongly encouraged. A new team suit is selected every 2 years.
Team swim suits are available from California Swim Shop and at team registration.

                                    REFUNDS

Should a swimmer opt not to remain on the team, to receive a refund they must
notify the swim team president in writing no later than the first Green & Gold
Meet. Registration fees will be refunded, less a $50 non-refundable portion.
After the first Green & Gold Meet, there will be no refunds

                                 SWIM MEETS

Swim meets are conducted totally by the families of the swimmers. Everyone’s
help is required to run a meet smoothly and efficiently. Some of the jobs you will
be required to perform are included below:
                         Volunteering for the Gators

Parent participation makes the recreational swim season function. Without
volunteers, swimmers cannot compete and swim meets cannot run. Each family must
volunteer at every meet in which their swimmer attends plus one non-meet event
(listed below). If a parent is unable to volunteer at a meet in which their swimmer
participates they must work a double shift at the next meet or volunteer at an
additional non-meet event. The 2012 events include; Flick and Float and Swim a
Thon, Cocktail Party, Champs advertisement and solicitation of sponsors.

Alternate volunteer jobs will be assigned on an as needed basis (please see
volunteer coordinator). Additional volunteering is required at Champs; parents are
required to volunteer for one shift each day their swimmer swims.

Please visit the team website at www.leaguelineup.com/collegegreens for a
list of volunteer positions available this season and a brief description of the
duties. We all want to see our kids swim and have fun, so the more volunteers we
have, the better.

Swim Meet Basics
      1. Sign your swimmers in to the meet by signing their name in the meet
      binder.
      3. Arrive at meets and report to the check-in clerk no later than 7am.
      4. Listen for warm-up announcements.
      5. Check heat/lane assignments before and after scratch session.
      6. Swimmers must report to Ready Bench when called. Listen for
      announcements to avoid missing races.
      7. Clean up after yourself.
      8. Help breakdown.
Note: To be eligible to swim at the SSL Champs meet, a swimmer must compete in a
minimum of 3 dual meets.

Swimmers and other children should not be running around or sitting at the edge of
the pool, as this interferes with the duties of the meet officials. Swimmers and
family members must stay out of any secondary pools that exist at some of the
facilities. In particular, the wading pool, playground, and the volleyball court at the
College Greens Club are off limits during the meet. The Meet Referee may scratch
a swimmer from the meet for misconduct.
AWARDS

Ribbons are awarded at the individual meets for first through sixth place for each
heat. Families are asked to collect their ribbons from their family folder. The
ribbons are usually in the folders on the Monday or Tuesday following the meet.

Additionally, awards are given in the categories listed below to recognize individual
achievements and accomplishments during the season. Traditionally, these awards
are presented at a Team Awards Party at the Club at the end of the swim season.

Award categories:
           1. High Point Boy – 6&Under
                  High Point Girl – 6&Under

                  close (i.e., within two points).
