Press release 10/03 Scandlines remains on course for growth in 2002 In 2002, the German-Danish ferry line, Scandlines, improved its transport results on the routes between Germany and Sweden as well as between Germany and Denmark. Scandlines was also able to reverse the trend on the Øresund line between Helsingør and Helsingborg. Transport numbers in almost all segments increased compared with 2001, the first rise since the opening of the Øresund Bridge in summer 2000. The 16 lines operated by Scandlines AG carried a total of 19,921,055 passengers, 3.947.133 cars, 90,036 buses/coaches, 875,464 trucks and 109,978 railcars. This volume further strengthens the shipping line’s leading position in the Baltic Sea ferry sector. 2002 transport results for all routes 2002 Passengers Cars Truck Buses/coaches Railcars 19,921,055 3,947,133 875,464 90,036 109,978 2002 vs. 2001 - 23,723 (- 0.1%) + 352,504 (+ 9.8%) - 2,030 (- 0.2%) + 3,350 (+ 3.9 %) - 8,032 (- 6.8%) Of which declines relating to seaplanes* (- 914,669) *Seaplanes: Copenhagen-Malmö and Copenhagen-Helsingborg Germany- Denmark lines The positive development on the routes between Germany and Denmark continued in 2002, with 9.5% more passengers, 16.4% more cars, 0.7% more trucks and 7.6% more buses/coaches transported. This positive development was helped by the general rise in tourist traffic between Germany and Scandinavia as well as the “Border Shop” at the Port Centre in Puttgarden. Contrary to the general market development, Scandlines was able, together with Scandlines AB, to increase the number of cars carried by 16.4%, with a corresponding growth rate for passengers of 4.6%. This means that, on its direct lines to and from Sweden, Scandlines remains the market leader in passenger traffic between Germany and Southern Sweden for the second year running. It was not possible last year to achieve the growth rates attained on the Baltic State routes in 2001. However, the notable transport results realised on the Karlshamn-Liepaja (+ 26.6%) and Rostock-Liepaja (+ 3.0%) links almost compensated for the decline experienced on the Kiel/Sassnitz-Klaipeda routes. The wisdom of the decision taken by Scandlines in 2001 to open up the Rostock-Liepaja cargo service for passengers was borne out in 2002. The increased capacity on the “Urd” ferry made it possible to carry 144% more passengers on this route last year. This development is likely to be helped, amongst other things, by the slight economic upturn forecast for the European Union as well as the above-average economic growth rates in the countries of the former Socialist bloc. To further optimise the Baltic State lines, the shipping lines Scandlines and LISCO, who jointly operate the “Kiel-Klaipeda-Express”, plan to introduce a two-vessel system in the not too distant future. Reducing the crossing time by 10 hours to just 20 hours each way will enable the six departures per week in each direction to be covered by just two ships instead of the present three. Weekly transport capacities will also be increased by 40%. The 2,100 load metres of cargo capacity per vessel and substantially shorter crossing times will considerably improve the competitiveness and attractiveness of this service compared with the overland route. Following the extension to the “Mecklenburg-Vorpommern” ferry vessel, cargo customers will have 25% more capacity at their disposal from mid-March. This will also enable Scandlines to respond effectively to the growing demands of the rail market, which is in the process of being liberalised, as well as provide more extensive services in the combined goods transport segment.
