Joining our Board of Trustees
An Opportunity to Invest in Innovation
...“the arts should be seen as leaders in innovation in technology.
Fundamentally, what we want to achieve is the long-overdue recognition that the arts sit at the centre of the change we
are all experiencing, not at the periphery. The importance of the arts is growing, not diminishing. As our science
minister David Willetts has said, “instead of just thinking about STEM, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths, we
should add the Arts so it becomes STEAM”.
Ed Vaisey, (UK) Minister for Culture Feb 2012
Art Gene are leaders in re-visioning regeneration. We are always interested in receiving applications
from potential new Trustees to act as advocates for Art Gene’s work and to extend our Board’s skills
and demographic range. Art Gene is a relatively new Charity having been a Not-for-Profit organisation
since it’s incorporation in 2002.
th
2012 is our 10 year ‘Re-visioning the role of artists and more recently architects, other
specialists and communities in the regeneration of the social, natural and built environment’
We have already this year launched our new website which we see as a key tool in promoting and
documenting our work and in developing new relationships and projects. We hope you will find it
interesting and informative. Our tenth year is also the first year of the new National Portfolio
Organisations structure at Art Council England, which presents us with new challenges and
opportunities to further expand our primary activities across the NW Region and continue with our
(inter)nationally focussed programme through a wide and growing network of associates.
In the new financial year we will be recruiting another key member to our core team of staff to help us in
our expansion. We will also be completing two major sea-change funded projects in Barrow and
Sunderland, whilst further developing and delivering a range of new initiatives and projects locally and
regionally.
We hope you will consider making an application to join us as a trustee and share your skills
and experience in helping Art Gene ‘give form to need’.
Trustees Responsibilities
The Board of trustees meet quarterly at our premises in Barrow-in-Furness. Members are required to
attend at least three of the four meetings held annually, one of which is also our AGM. Initial terms are 3
years and members must retire after a maximum of 3 terms (9 years). Board Member’s Travel
Expenses are reimbursed and we begi each meeting with informal conversation, home cooked food and
a range of refreshments.
Art Gene Board Members are encouraged to take on specific responsibilities in line with their skills and
experience. Each of our Board Members are allocated time within each meeting to present updates and
share their recent activities and interests with fellow Trustees.
We try to organise regular training events for our Board. This year we have been fortunate that Arts
Council England have successfully secured a prestigious and intensive Clore Board Training and
Development Day for Art Gene’s Board of Trustees to take place in June 2012.
Trustees are offered hot-desking facilities and the use of computers and IT at Art Gene to aid them in
supporting the company’s objectives as part of our team.
