Introduction: Your Writing's Business Model
Hi Fellow Writer Welcome to this free report, and to Fab Freelance Writing Ezine. I hope you enjoy your subscription, and that it starts you on a long, happy and rewarding freelance career.
Your freelance writing career starts with your business model
Here's the Editorial from ezine issue #129, discussing business models. It's vital information, and I've rarely seen it discussed elsewhere.
The right business model FOR YOU can mean the difference between making three times what you can make in any day job within 12 months of starting full time freelancing, and being a hobbyist writer.
What’s a "business model"?
As the name suggests, a business model is simply how you choose to make money as a writer.
Viable business models include: * Writing and selling articles for Web and for print * Writing and selling ebooks
Develop a six-figure writing career: http://fabfreelancewriting.com/Buy/ buy-ebooks.html
Freelance Writing for Beginners: Opportunities Page: 5
* Copywriting for businesses * Blogging as a pro blogger * Using your writing skills to sell affiliate products * Selling a mix of writing services (writing articles, blogging, writing ebooks for pay etc.)
There's also my personal favorite: * A "mixed" business model where you mix and match, combining several business models into a high-powered, high income strategy which works for you. (This is the model we teach to SYWON subscribers at http://sellwritingnow.com/Home/training.html )
Your business model should be motivating: it should get you out of bed in the morning. If you can fall in love with your business model, you've got it made. You'll make money, and your "work" will be all play. :-)
How to choose the right business model for you
Here's the best advice I can give you: choose the business model which seems the most FUN.
In 30-plus years of writing, I've chosen the wrong business model several times, often out of sheer greed. (Although I agree with Samuel Johnson that "No man but a blockhead ever wrote, except for money", writing what you HATE just for money is the sure route to burnout and despair.)
Develop a six-figure writing career: http://fabfreelancewriting.com/Buy/ buy-ebooks.html
Freelance Writing for Beginners: Opportunities Page: 6
You can get blinded by greed when people wave money in your face, but writing what you hate, just for money, is the hardest money you'll ever earn. So, choose a business model you think you may love (you can't know whether you'll love it until you're actually doing it), and then put your heart and soul into it.
The business models I mentioned above are all viable business models which are making money for others. You can certainly come up with your own, but do be aware that some business models are risky.
For example, writing fiction as a business model is risky. You can spend years writing books which don't sell. However, if you feel that writing novels is something you must do – it's a calling – then go for it. Nowadays the Internet gives you many options to make money, and if you want to write novels, you can make money from that by promoting them online, but be aware that a huge income from novels or short stories is unlikely, unless you get a sponsor.
This week's articles will help you to choose a business model.
Why would you want to choose a business model? Can't you just write?
If you're thinking that choosing a business model constrains you too much, you may want to rethink that.
Here's why: a business model helps you to focus your efforts.
Develop a six-figure writing career: http://fabfreelancewriting.com/Buy/ buy-ebooks.html
Freelance Writing for Beginners: Opportunities Page: 7
I'm in constant contact with writers. If there's one thing that all writers who aren't making great money freelancing have in common it's this: a lack of focus.
They flit from one thing to another, never staying put long enough to give their writing business a chance. They think, to coin a cliché, that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, and that they could/ should be writing something else, anything else.
A mixed business model can work for you: you can write blogs, websites, ebooks, PLR content… anything you choose, IF you have a method. I wrote Sell Your Writing Online NOW (SYWON) to give writers a method of making money online which would give them lots of experience and get them making a great income fast, using a mixed business model.
But if you're not working to a method, then flitting is dangerous. So please, choose a business model, and focus on it. Give it a chance to work for you. Document your progress; use marketing to get the most mileage from whatever model you've chosen. Talk soon, in the ezine. :-)
Affectionately

Freelance Writing for Beginners: 3 Tips
Are you a beginning freelance writer? There are huge opportunities for writers at the moment. If you're not making a great income with your writing within six months there's something wrong with your strategy. Here are three tips which will help you to kick start your career.
Firstly, you need to develop a professional writer's mindset. A professional is solely concerned with his buyers. Look at the services you offer from their point of view, rather than your own.
Here are three questions your buyers are asking themselves. Answer these questions, and you'll build a fantastic freelance writing career.
1. Who Are You? Create a Winning Profile and Bio
Getting freelance writing jobs is easy when you promote your services.
Start by telling people who you are. You're not working at a job, so you don't need a resume or CV. You do need a profile and bio. Your profile and bio lets buyers of your writing estimate whether you're the right fit for the writing jobs they have in mind.
Develop a six-figure writing career: http://fabfreelancewriting.com/Buy/ buy-ebooks.html
Freelance Writing for Beginners: Opportunities Page: 11
The first time you write a profile, it's intimidating. Most writers are by nature shy, and hate talking about themselves. So, pretend you're talking about somebody else; just get that profile and bio written.
2. Tell Me Why I Should Trust You: Create a Friendly, Professional Web Site
You writer's website isn't optional. It's essential. I've never been able to understand why some writers are lazy about creating a website, but are quite prepared to spend hours every week searching for low-paying writing jobs.
As with your profile and bio, your website establishes you. It tells buyers why they should trust you. It's professional; you'll attract buyers of writing who are looking for professional writers, rather than cheap "content producers".
3. How Much Do You Cost? Get Comfortable Setting Your Rates
Top writers charge more because they provide more value, so they're in demand. The ability to add value to a project comes from experience. You can't buy experience, you can only earn it.
When you're a beginner, don't worry too much about your rates. You don't have any bargaining power, so take any writing jobs you can get. This is all part of paying your dues as a writer -- remember, you earn experience, it doesn't magically descend on you.
Develop a six-figure writing career: http://fabfreelancewriting.com/Buy/ buy-ebooks.html
Freelance Writing for Beginners: Opportunities Page: 12
As you become more experienced, you will become more comfortable at both setting, and raising, your rates.

Writing Articles: from Zero to $500 a Day
Want an easy way to make money online? Writing articles can be very profitable for you. But can you really make $500 a day? You can make considerably more, if you're prepared to put a little effort into articles.
Here's an easy process you can follow: it's simple, it's effective, and it works.
1. Choose an Affiliate Product
Your first step is to choose an affiliate product to promote. Hundreds of thousands of products are available, so choose one which appeals to you and which you'd like to write about.
2. Write a Review
Next, when you've signed up to the affiliate program for your chosen product, write a review of it. Make your review around 300 to 500 words long. Write an honest review: tell your readers what you really think about the product.
Develop a six-figure writing career: http://fabfreelancewriting.com/Buy/ buy-ebooks.html
Freelance Writing for Beginners: Opportunities Page: 14
3. Add Your Review to a Blog
Either create a blog on your own domain, or choose one of the free blogging applications. Creating a blog on your own domain is preferable. When your blog is on your own domain you have complete control of it.
Remember that you'll be making money with your review for months and years to come: if your review suddenly vanishes, all your article writing is wasted effort.
4. Write Articles Promoting Your Review
Write articles promoting your review: that is, articles on the topic of your product, and pointing to your review.
For example, if you're promoting a weight loss product, write articles about weight loss. The articles' resource box should point to your review. As people read your article, they will read your review, and some will buy the product, earning you a commission each time.
Big tip: the longer your articles are online the more valuable they are, because the more views (and sales) they will garner. If you haven't made a sale in the first week, don't feel that the process isn't working.
5. Repeat!
Now just repeat the process. Choose another product, write another review, and promote your review.
Develop a six-figure writing career: http://fabfreelancewriting.com/Buy/ buy-ebooks.html
Freelance Writing for Beginners: Opportunities Page: 15
As you can see the process is very simple. However don't be deceived by its simplicity. It's an extremely powerful way make money online just by writing articles. Be consistent and persistent, and you will indeed make $500 and more each day.

Blogging for Writers: Boost Your Writing Career
Want a successful writing career? Whether you're a new writer, or are an established pro, your blog can help. In 2009, blogging is essential for writers: it gets you known.
1. Your Blog Will Teach You What to Write for Success
Here's the big benefit of blogging for writers: your blog will show you what people respond to in your writing. Before the advent of instant publishing on blogs, discovering this could take years of heartbreak and frustration. The lack of feedback and response to their writing leads many writers to giving up writing completely, never realizing that they could have had a wonderful career.
Look on your blog's readers as your ultimate, totally free, focus group. Treat them well: they're the bedrock of your writing career.
2. Your Blog Gives You Writing Practice
There's one major difference between successful writers, and others: they write. Your blog encourages you to write, so that you won't disappoint your readers.
Develop a six-figure writing career: http://fabfreelancewriting.com/Buy/ buy-ebooks.html
Freelance Writing for Beginners: Opportunities Page: 17
This motivates you, and builds your writing practice. There's a direct correlation between how much you write, and your success. If you're not having the success you feel you could be, the answer is simple -- you're not writing enough.
3. Your Blog Helps You to Sell Your Writing
Your blog can turn you into a Cinderella writer. There you are, blogging away, and along comes your fairy godmother and swats you with her wand. "Arise, Cinders -- here's a publishing contract!"
Could it happen to you? Maybe, since it's happened to other writers.
The fact is that your blog will help you to sell your writing however, because the fact that you have a blog, and blog consistently, tells buyers of your writing that you are indeed a competent writer.
4. Blogging Pitfalls
While your blogs will build your writing career, there are pitfalls.
Here they are:
* Whining and complaining: don't do it, ever, if you hope to be taking seriously as a professional writer. Yes, some professionals who should know better do it, but you can be sure that it will have an effect on their next writing contract -- if indeed they're offered one;

Freelance Writing for Beginners: Opportunities Page: 18
* Focusing too much on yourself and your life on a professional blog. Separate personal blogs, from a professional blogs.
Start your blog today: you'll be glad you did. A blog is an essential tool for your writing career.

Article Writing: Hot Skills for the Web
Want to make money writing for the Web? Learn how to write articles -writing articles is a hot skill which is in high demand. Web articles are very different from print articles, and are easier to write.
To get started, think about your own searching and reading habits on the Web. What makes a Web page appealing? Consider: lots of white space, sub-headings, bullet points, and images.
Aim to make your articles appealing, right from the start, by writing in short paragraphs, using clear language, and making points quickly, rather than waffling.
Here are three tips which will help your article writing.
1. What's an Article's Purpose?
Before planning an article, or a series of articles, you must know their purpose.
If you've been hired to write articles, you'll often just be given a set of keywords. If so, your purpose is to write, using the keywords effectively.
If you're writing articles for your own Web properties, your purpose might be: to get traffic from the search engines, to make a sale of your
Develop a six-figure writing career: http://fabfreelancewriting.com/Buy/ buy-ebooks.html
Freelance Writing for Beginners: Opportunities Page: 20
own product or an affiliate product, or to educate or entertain your site's visitors.
I often write articles in sets of five, or ten or more, over a couple of days, so I create a folder for the articles, with a file of notes, containing a list of keywords, the articles' purpose, and article titles. Making notes ensures that I can pick up writing where I left off, even if several days go by.
2. Beyond Keywords: Article Titles and Descriptions
While keywords are important to ensure that your articles are found on the Web, your article titles and their descriptions are equally important. When people are searching, the results pages -- the Web pages which are returned after a Web query -- contain lists of Web page titles, and descriptions.
When writing titles and descriptions, include the primary keyword you're targeting.
3. What's the Takeaway?
Every article you write should contain a takeaway: a clear benefit for your reader. When you think in terms of articles' purpose, and their takeaways, you'll write articles which are read, and which get a response.
Enjoy writing articles. It's a hot skill when you want to make money on the Web.

Writing Jobs: 5 Unique Web Jobs for Writers
Are you looking for writing jobs? Consider focusing on the Web. As businesses and publications continue to move online, there are plenty of jobs available for writers who know the Web.
Use your creativity in your job hunt: remember that the Web is unknown territory to most businesses. The more you know about how the Web works, the more you'll be able to charge for your services.
Let's look at five unique jobs for Web writers.
1. Article Marketing for Money: High Profits
Get familiar with article marketing. Once you know how this works, you can develop an entire business just on writing articles, and developing article marketing campaigns.
For most businesses, article marketing is a new promotional tool. Once you explain how cost-effective it is when compared to other forms of marketing however, you'll easily get clients.
2. Social Media Marketing: Business Blogging
Over the past couple of years, blogging has become mainstream, and businesses already know what a blog can do for them. However, they're
Develop a six-figure writing career: http://fabfreelancewriting.com/Buy/ buy-ebooks.html
Freelance Writing for Beginners: Opportunities Page: 23
not as aware of other social media marketing options. If you're experienced on social media sites like Facebook and know how to blog, you can sell these marketing services to businesses.
3. Daily Ezines for Businesses
Although many businesses collect contact information, most don't use it. If you can show potential clients the return on investment (ROI) of a daily ezine, they'll hire you in a heartbeat.
4. Affiliate Manager for Products
Few businesses with affiliate programs manage their affiliates efficiently. They may provide a few creative tools -- banners and advertisements -but that's all.
As an affiliate manager, you have two main areas of responsibility: providing tools affiliates can use (articles, autoresponder sequences, advertising), and inspiring and motivating the affiliates.
5. Writing Mini Web Sites
If you can write small Web sites of five to ten pages, you can both sell them, and can create them to order.
Many writers are shy of creating sites. No one is asking you to be a Web designer however. Get a simple (free) HTML template, write the pages, buy a domain name and get the site online. From go to whoa, this should

take you no longer than three hours. Profit? Around $100 a page, at a minimum.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ** Freelance Blogging: Fun, Easy and VERY Profitable ** Want a new freelance writing career? Become a freelance blogger. I've been blogging since 2001, and I'm swamped with offers of blogging gigs, and so are other freelancers who are highly visible on the Web. Blogging has huge returns on investment for businesses, so they're hiring bloggers to update their blogs each day – often several times a day. Freelance Writing: Web Writing Opportunities for 2009
Worried about your freelance writing income in 2009? Don't be -- as companies cut marketing budgets, freelancers can thrive. Let's look at four great opportunities you should be focusing on in 2009.
1. Copywriting for Companies Which Have Trimmed Their Marketing Departments
If you want a busy freelance writing career, learn copywriting. Copywriting is basically writing promotional materials for business. It includes writing materials like press releases, advertising, and white papers.
As companies trim or cut their marketing departments, they out-source jobs which were previously performed by staff. Not only does this cut down on payroll, it means that they can hire specialists, and can pay them well.
2. Web Content Writing Under Contract: Monthly Content Packages
Dollar for dollar, content creation for Web sites is the best return on their advertising dollars for companies, because the content brings site traffic month after month, and year after year.
Develop a six-figure writing career: http://fabfreelancewriting.com/Buy/ buy-ebooks.html
Freelance Writing for Beginners: Opportunities Page: 26
This means that companies are actively looking for competent, reliable Web writers who will take charge of their Web site content.
As long as you think about your offerings from the point of view of your buyers, you can quickly build up a large stable of repeat buyers by offering monthly content packages.
3. Web Advertising Managers: Pay Per Click, Site Advertising
Web advertising works for companies. It's a thrifty option, because as with content, the return on investment is much better than it is for other forms of advertising, and it's easier to track.
So, if you offer Web advertising management, you'll get an avalanche of writing work. You can get certified with the Google Advertising Professionals program completely for free.
If you're a freelance copywriter now, consider offering Web advertising management: it's a brilliant opportunity.
4. Virtual Publicity Manager: Social Media Marketing
Perhaps you've heard of Social Media Marketing. If you're interested in "Web 2.0" applications like Twitter and Facebook, and already use these applications, think about how you might offer networking on these sites and others as part of the writing services you provide.
Develop a six-figure writing career: http://fabfreelancewriting.com/Buy/ buy-ebooks.html
Freelance Writing for Beginners: Opportunities Page: 27
As a virtual publicity manager, you could offer a range of social media marketing services including: blogging, social networking, and writing online press releases.
This is a completely new field. If you get established in the field, the sky's the limit on your freelance writing income.
Build your freelance writing career
Want to develop a six-figure writing income?
The September 2007 issue of The Writer had a great story: “Secrets Of The Six-Figure Freelancers”. The story was wonderful because it showed writers the potential of a freelance writing career; with the development of the Web and its unlimited markets, if you can write, you can make a great income as a freelance writer.
I chuckled when I read the story because many writers think a “six figure income” is hype. Either that, or they think that a great income is reserved for copywriters, or genre novelists, or other specialist writers. The fact is that YOU can develop a six-figure writing career: you just need to know that it’s possible to earn $250,000 a year and more as a freelance writer, and then make that your goal.
And of course, you need know-how. That's what my writing ebook manuals give you. In 30 years as a freelance writer, I've learned the tricks of the writing trade, and I'd love to share those tricks with you, so many of my ebooks offer free coaching. Whatever your level of experience as a freelance writer, you can develop a fantastic career, when you know how.
So come on, let's get started. Here are my current writing ebook manuals: http://fabfreelancewriting.com/Buy/buy-ebooks.html
I look forward to writing with you.
