WORKSHOP ON PROJECT FORMULATION AND RESEARCH DESIGN

Applications from young research scholars and teachers in social sciences are invited for
participating in the Workshop on Project Formulation and Research Design being organised
by the Giri Institute of Development Studies in collaboration with the Indian Association of
Social Science Institutions during March 7-13, 2011 at Lucknow. Details of the workshop are
Objective of the Workshop
The objective of the workshop is to train young social scientists in formulating a research
project whether leading to a Ph.D. degree or for conducting an empirical study of a selected
The focus of the workshop would be on identifying the research problem, formulating a
proper research design for probing the research problem and selection of appropriate
research methodology and tools for the same. The course content will include the following

3. Review of literature
4. Identifying the research objectives
5. Research Methodology
6. Research Design
7. Sampling Techniques
8. Research tools and data collection
9. Selecting appropriate tools of data analysis
10. Time schedule, Staff requirements and cost of Study

The workshop methodology would be based on lectures, group discussions, presentation by
participants as well as library work. Senior social scientists will be invited to deliver lectures
on various themes, which will be followed by question-answer sessions. The participants
would be required to work out a research plan and present it in the presence of participants
and experts. There would be 2-3 lecture sessions per day of 90 minute duration followed by
library consultation and computer work.
Duration of the Workshop
The workshop will be held during 7th to 13th March. Last two days will be devoted to
presentation and discussion of research proposals prepared by the participants.
The workshop is primarily meant for research scholars/teachers who have joined research
or plan to submit a research proposal for funding. About 30 participants would be selected
for the workshop. Priority will be given to young research scholars and teachers, with some
experience of research and publication.
A registration fee of Rs. 500 will be charged in case of teachers or students getting
fellowship. Other students will be charged Rs. 250.
Travel Cost and Accommodation
Selected candidates will be paid train fare by 3rd AC. Stay arrangement will be made in the
institute hostel on twin sharing basis or in nearby guest houses. Local hospitality will be
provided by the Institute.
Process of Submission of Application
Persons desirous of attending the workshop may apply to the director giving their full CV
including academic record, experience, research work already done, topic of research and
institution where enrolled, publications, etc. A proposal of about 1000 word on the topic on
which the scholar would like to work should be submitted with the application. Persons
employed should send their applications through proper channel.
Institute reserves the right to select or not to select any persons for the workshop without
assigning any reason.
