Making the Case for Community Development
Key speaker: Mandy Wilson, Director, Communities and Organisations:
Growth and Support (COGS) will outline the national policy context presented
by the White Paper, Communities in Control and the role of community
development in making this a reality. She will draw on examples from Local
Authorities and the work of the ‘Community Development Challenge’ working

Fourways the Community Alleygating Project.
As a District Authority, Crewe and Nantwich has a history of working and
developing communities of geography and communities of interest. This project
started within the Safer Communities Partnership and required community
development skills and practice. The case study highlights the journey of local
communities, detailing engagement, learning and empowerment dimensions.
In addition to presentations there will be facilitated discussions where participants will
be invited to share their experiences and reflect on the implications for their work.
The North West Together We Can Network supports regional learning
opportunities for local authority practitioners, policy-makers, councillors and
community representatives who are keen to explore issues of community
engagement and active citizenship.
