Admission and Program Guide
Master of Education (MEd) in Elementary Education,
Initial Licensure (Grades 1-6)
This program is designed for persons who have a bachelor’s degree and seek initial licensure in
elementary education (grades 1-6).
Completed application must include:
Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.8 [Contact Graduate School for “GPA remedy.”]
Official transcripts of all graduate and undergraduate course work
Qualifying scores for Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) – Communication and
Literacy Skills Test
Three letters of recommendation
Important Note: Students must earn qualifying scores on the MTEL – General Curriculum in order to take
courses beyond ELED 510 Fundamentals of Elementary Education and EDMC 530 The Teacher as
Researcher. Students must pass the MTEL – Foundations of Reading to be eligible for an initial license.
All accepted students must enroll under the direction of their adviser in GRPP 501 Graduate Program
Students must complete 80 hours of prepractica experience. A 40-hour experience is attached to the
course ELED 510. An additional 40 hours is attached to the professional courses: reading, language arts,
mathematics, and science and social studies.
Important Note: Students must complete the following courses. All courses are offered each
semester. Only ELED 510 is offered during the summer sessions.

ELED 511 Theory and Practice in Teaching Reading
ELED 512 Theory and Practice in Teaching Language Arts
ELED 513 Mathematical Applications for the Classroom
ELED 514 Exemplary Practice in Science and Social Studies Classrooms
ELED 515 Differentiating Instruction: Creating Inclusive Classrooms
ELED 592 Practicum: Elementary Education [Student Teaching for one semester]
Exit Requirement: Student teaching documentation package (PPA and competency portfolio)
