Statement of Goal
Upon completion of the program, students will demonstrate improvement in foreign language speaking
skills acquired over the course of study.
How Results Were Analyzed (When and By Whom?)
The Department Chair met / will meet informally with each faculty member throughout the semester to
discuss the prospective graduates’ oral proficiency.
Evidence Gathered
Instructors evaluate performance in foreign language courses throughout the program, in part using the
American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL) scale for oral proficiency. Additionally,
Secondary Education majors took the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI), which uses the ACTFL scale.
Expectations of Performance
All students should rate at least “intermediate-high” on the ACTFL scale for oral proficiency both in class
and, for Secondary Education majors, on the OPI.

Analysis and Explanation
Currently, this learning outcome is formally evaluated only for Secondary Education majors.
Action(s) to Maintain or Improve Level of Achievement
Pending Art and Science Curriculum Committee and University Curriculum Committee approval, the
Department will require all foreign language prospective graduates to take the official OPI, beginning
with those students entering the program in fall 2008. In the meantime, the Department will strongly
recommend that current students take an official or in-house OPI. Also, beginning immediately, the
expectation of performance will be increased to “advanced-low” or better.

structure and improved writing skills.
How Results Were Analyzed (When and By Whom?)
The Department Chair met / will meet informally with each faculty member throughout the semester to
discuss the prospective graduates’ written proficiency.

Instructors evaluated / evaluate performance in foreign language courses throughout the program, in part
using the ACTFL scale.
Expectations of Performance
At this time, all instructors rate students using his or her own criteria or rubrics.
Results / Evaluation
Grades have not been reported yet for this semester.
Analysis and Explanation
At this time, the Department is not using a standardized method of evaluating written proficiency.
Action(s) to Maintain or Improve Level of Achievement
During the upcoming academic year, the Department will standardize the criteria and rubrics used to
evaluate student written proficiency at every level in the program. These rubrics will utilize the ACTFL
scale.

Foreign language students are required to pass courses in the culture/civilization, linguistics, and literature
of the target language.

The Department will continue to require students to pass courses in culture/civilization, linguistics, and
literature, and will continue to offer an array of courses in these subjects.
