TIPS FOR ATTENDING SUNY DELHI’S RECRUITMENT/ CAREER FAIR
SUNY Delhi’s Recruitment & Career Fairs are an excellent opportunity to investigate
summer, full-time and internship opportunities with local and regional employers.
Employers are visiting SUNY Delhi to evaluate our students and our campus. Here are
some tips to assist you in making a good first impression:
DRESS APPROPRIATELY: Professional attire is strongly recommended! If you are
coming from a lab, bring a change of clothes or go back to your dorm. You can only
make one first impression!
PRACTICE YOUR HANDSHAKE & GREETING: Remember that interviewing is
communicating and you are being evaluated from the first moment you meet each
employer. Maintain good eye contact and use a firm, not crushing handshake! Introduce
yourself; “Hi, I’m….. It’s nice to meet you!”
BRING COPIES OF YOUR RESUME: Certain employers and industries will expect
you to have an updated and professional resume to provide them. Ask for the employer’s
business card to follow up with a phone call, letter or email to show continued interest.
Remember to highlight the skills that fit the employer’s needs!
DON’T BE SHY, ASK QUESTIONS: Be prepared. . Research employers you are
interested in. Employers are attending the career fair to find quality employees
DO ASK QUESTIONS:
What types of positions are currently open at your company?
Do you have summer positions? Full-time positions? Internships?
What is your management style? (Authoritative, Coaching/ Democratic),
What is a typical day like?
What skills are you looking for in an employee?
How do you evaluate and promote your employees?
What do you like most about your company and working there?
Can you help me with relocation?
Do you have management training positions?
I have a copy of my resume. May I leave it with you?
Do not ask about salary until a position is offered unless the employer initiates.
Do not talk about skills you do not have.
Do not be rude or obnoxious.
Do not wear hats, your hoodie, PJ's or pants that are hanging off of your hips.
Remember to thank each employer for speaking with you and shake their hand again. Be
polite, positive, and persuasive.
