Huron Hurricanes Aquatic Club Tobacco-Free Policy Commitment: The Huron Hurricanes Aquatic Club values a healthy athletic environment and wants to promote positive role modeling for all swimmers. The health hazards of using and being exposed to tobacco products, including smoking and secondhand smoke is counter- productive to swimmers training for competitive meets, triathlons, and recreational swimming. We believe swimming is a healthy, and lifelong sport, as well as an essential lifeskill, and we have the responsibility to model positive healthy behavior and encourage swimmers, coaches, parents, and others to respect our tobacco-free policy. The tobacco-free policy is established to: Give swimmers a chance to perform at their physical best Discourage swimmers from using tobacco products Model positive healthy behaviour to the youth and community Policy: All practices, activities, swim meets, sponsored events and other events by the Huron Hurricanes will be tobacco-free. To clarify any tobacco product, including smoking, chewing and dipping, is not permitted at any HHAC function. Swim coaches, parents and anyone near the activity must refrain from using tobacco products. Using tobacco products is not permitted at the pool, viewing area and in the parking lot. Smokers must use the designated smoking area. Promotion: We will promote the tobacco-free policy at our events by: Explaining the policy to swimmers, coaches, and parents Send a letter home with the parents about the policy Have signs up around the pool area Have the policy on our website and bulletin board Reinforcement: Anyone who uses tobacco (any tobacco product) during one of our organizations events shall be warned and informed of the policy if they didn’t know about it and will be asked to stop tobacco use while the event is going on. If a person continues to ignore the policy, they will be asked to leave. The success of this policy will depend upon the mutual consideration and co-operation of all.
