                      Expectations
Respect:
I will treat students with respect.
I will expect you to treat others, property, and ideas with
respect.
Responsibility:
I will hold you responsible for…
    attention, effort, and neatness
 SWJHS principles of distinction: cooperation, integrity,
           fairness, courage, commitment, trust, empathy,
           communication, friendship, tolerance, respect, humor,
           responsibility, and enthusiasm
 current homework or dated placeholder with
           reason/plan
    planners displayed on desk
 accumulated vocabulary words in their own section
Daily Supplies:
 pens & pencils; I will only accept written work done in blue or
black pen or computer-printed. You will also need a
highlighter and red pens for editing/checking.
        3-ring binder with loose-leaf paper (not spiral-bound)
 a folder, or a section of a binder, for handouts
        sticky notes
 textbook or novel called for that day
 spiral notebook (70-100 pp.) to stay in classroom
        your completed assignments
        YOUR PLANNER

*************Keep this sheet in your English notebook*************
When you arrive each day: Place your book bags outside and turn in
homework to the correct hour box as you enter the classroom. Make
sure your heading includes name and number, subject, hour, date,
and assignment (for proper credit.) If you don't have your homework
for whatever reason (sick, locker, dog…), turn in a reminder form.
Please turn in work on time so that you will receive full credit for your
efforts and so that you will not be required to do additional/different
work. If you are confused or struggling with an assignment, it is
better for you to turn something in, rather than nothing. Most days
there will be a spiral “bell-ringer” to begin upon entering. It will be a
reflection, poetry, vocabulary or Daily Oral Language (DOL.) Our
regular vocabulary words for the year will be grouped according to
Greek and Latin word parts. You will be tested periodically on 10 to
20 words and you will have a cumulative test at the end of each
semester.
For extra help: I am usually available to help you before and after
school or at other pre-arranged times. If you wish to come in, have me
pre-sign your planner, so that you may to enter the building early. If I
determine that you need to spend some additional time on English
assignments, reading, or homework, I will make those arrangements
with you, your parents, and, if necessary, school administration.
Our challenges: I will provide an atmosphere for learning. That
means there will be hard work, as well as fun. If your behavior
contributes to that atmosphere, all will be well. If not, then rude,
distracting behavior that wastes our precious time in class will result
in removal from class, detentions served with me or another
designated staff member, and parent notification.
Contact: My plan/contact time is 2nd period—9:00-9:45 M,T,F, or
8:08-9:20 on even Wednesdays, or 8:08-9:45 on even Thursdays. My
email is kwillhit@usd497.org for a convenient contact. My classroom
phone # is 330-4770 and my cell is 218-0981. Our class website will
provide helpful information and assignments. It may be accessed
directly at http://teachers.usd497.org/kwillhit/ or by going to the
district website http://usd497.org and then to schools, SWJHS,
faculty, Mrs. Willhite.
Grades: Grading will be largely on effort. I will always round grades in
your favor and simply use % of total points: 90 and up for an A, 80 for
B, etc. Together we will question, write, edit, laugh, discuss, and read,
read, read, hopefully at least one book per quarter. It is my hope for
us to share both the passion and the discipline of language that is
required for you to leave English 8 with strengthened reading and
writing skills. To this end, please go over this hand-out with your
parents or guardians, have them sign the attached page for you to tear
off and return for points.
 Kristi Willhite kwillhit@usd497.org
