National Higher
Education System in
Turkey
Four stages of Turkish Educational
System:
pre-school education (on-compulsory),
primary education, (compulsory 8 year
programme)
secondary education (High Schools)
higher education (state and foundation
universities)
The higher education Law No. 2547 is the
main law, which governs the higher education
in Turkey.
Admission to higher education is based on a
nation-wide Student Selection Examination
(ÖSS ). The examination is held once a year
and is administrated by the Student Selection
and Placement Center (ÖSYM).
Graduate level of study consists of the
Master’s Degree and the
PhD’s/Doctorate Degree
Medical specialization programs are
equivalent to doctoral level
The Higher Education System is
regulated by the Council of Higher
Education (Yüksek Öğretim Kurulu,
YÖK).
Introduction to Başkent
University
In response to Turkey’s need for high
quality institutions of higher education,
the Organ Transplant and Burns
Treatment Foundation, which has been
in operation since 1980, decided to turn
its existing complexes into a university
In 1993 the procedures were begun to
establish Başkent University
Başkent University has also been
awarded a Quality System Certificate and
respectively our education principles are
designed in accordance with these
quality standards.

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK
The Department of Social Work
was established in the 2002-2003
academic year in order to run BA
level education program in social
work.
A Social Work Masters Program is
planning to start in the following
years.
OBJECTIVES OF THE
PROGRAM
To enable students to integrate the
knowledge, values, and skills of the
social work profession into competent
practice with various client systems in
urban and rural areas;
To prepare students for leadership in
administration, social planning,
teaching, consultation, supervision, and
social research;
To train professionals who are aware of
their responsibility to continue their
professional development.
FACTS ABOUT THE
PROGRAM
The period of program is four years.
Students have one-year of Preperation
Class for English language.
Besides theoretical work, courses
involves practices, project works and
research activities.
Students are enabled to choose elective
courses according to his/her field of
interest.
A student must complete 149 credits
during 8 semester.
35 students are accepted every year. The total
number of students by 2009-2010 academic
year is 147.
Department of Social Work is a member of
International Association of Schools of Social
Work (IASSW) and European Federation of
Schools of Social Work (EASSW).
The Department is actively enrolled in EU
Sokrates-Erasmus Exchange program, and
received and send many students and
academic staff from/to different Universities in
Germany, Belgium, Poland, Nederlands and
Hungary.
