Primary Guided Reading Lesson Plan Title: The Pet Vet Genre: Text Structure: Level: D Realistic Fict. Narrative Informational Literacy Standard: 0601 Purpose for Reading: to identify rimes Content Standard: Enduring Understanding: Essential Questions: Identifying the rimes –et and –ill. Can these students identify the rimes –et and –ill within an unknown text? Before Reading Vocabulary: vet, ill, fix, hurt, mend Phonics: Use new vocabulary words in conversation to Remind students of the rimes –et and -ill by reveal meaning highlighting words on the word wall that were added during the initial lesson. Activate/Build Background Knowledge: Do any of you have pets? Have your pets ever gotten sick? Comprehension Strategy: KWL Chart Where do you take you pet when they get sick? What do you call a pet doctor? During Reading Interactive Read Aloud: When students notice a word within the text that has the –et or the –ill rime, they raise their hands and say the word, come point to the word, and then are given a piece of highlighter tape to cover the word Attend to Comprehension Within, Beyond, & About the text: highlight the new vocabulary words & their meaning After Reading Return to KWL chart and double check what we knew about vets and correct if needed / add new information to chart Attend to Comprehension Within, Beyond, & About the text: Content Core Integration:(Science, Soc. St., Math, etc.) Assessment: Activities: see activity Each student will receive a sheet of paper with the rimes –et (on the left side) and –ill (on the right side). There will be an empty box in front of each rime. Each student will be given a set of alphabet flashcards. They will be asked to place the a letter in the box in front of each rime and try to come up with as many “real” words as possible. Each time they find a new word, the write it on the worksheet under the correct rime. Students need to find at least one new word for each rime family. *Not all activities will be done in each lesson. Some lessons may take multiple days to complete. However, all students should be reading each time you meet.
