                            NEWS RELEASE
 Objective 1 DATE: 04/12/2007 Objective 1

Sustainability Award for Renewable Energy Facility

For the first time the CLAW (Consortium of Local Authorities in Wales)
Sustainability Award has been given to Ceredigion County Council for its
Renewable Energy Facility at Penmorfa in Aberaeron which was set up with the
aid of Objective 1 funding. The renewable energy facility at Penmorfa provides
heating and hot water to four large buildings and has already made CO2 emission
savings of around 400 tonnes, and energy cost savings amounting to around £21k
(42%).

Jane Davidson, the Minister for Sustainability and Housing unveiled the
Consortium Local Authorities Wales (CLAW) Sustainability Award Plaque at
Penmorfa, the council offices in Aberaeron, on Thursday 6 December. Jane said,
“I am especially pleased to celebrate the success today, which focuses on small
scale energy renewal and contributes to the security of energy supply. We hope
that this success story will encourage other local authorities to do the same.”

Leader of Ceredigion County Council Keith Evans said
“We are delighted with the progress we are making. We started off with a small
system in Llandysul and then embarked on the project here which provides energy
to a residential home, a school, offices and sheltered accommodation. We are
hoping to do a similar project in Aberystwyth, and in the future we hope this opens
up the potential for smaller systems in the private sector. These projects are good
because they save money, cut emissions, sustain local businesses – there is lots
of forestation in the county and the system runs on woodchip. The wood is sourced
locally from the Frongoch Sawmill, Trisant near Devil’s Bridge. We are proud to be
winning such a prestigious award.”

Funding partners for the scheme include the Community Energy Grant, the Wood
Energy Business Scheme, and the County Council’s Capital Programme. The
Biomass Facility has also been successful in winning various other National
Awards for Energy Conservation including The National Assembly Energy Group
Energy Conservation Award 2006 and Runner-up and Highly Commended at the
UK Building Services Awards July 2007 - Environmental Initiative of the Year.

CLAW is the Consortium of Local Authorities in Wales that supports
the professional and technical interests of property management in local
government in Wales. All Welsh County Councils are members of CLAW.
CLAW was formed in 1962 and now works with representatives from
the Elected Members and officials of all Welsh local authorities together with a
number of associate member organizations for the promotion of excellence in the
management of property assets.
