API is a six-week training program emphasizing water survival, physical readiness, and a rigorous academic program. The academic portion spans the first four weeks and covers aerodynamics, weather, engines, navigation, and flight rules and regulations at a strenuous, accelerated pace. Service members assigned to API should arrive in proper physical condition, prepared for a challenging physical regimen. Service members may have a waiting period between arrival and their start date. Waiting times vary based on designator, member status and the needs of the Navy. During the wait period, service members will attend training courses such as BOLTC (Basic Officer Leadership Training Continuum), receive a NOMI physical, take a Physical Fitness Assessment, undergo a swim screening, and may be assigned additional duties. This process requires the students to demonstrate basic survival 5 strokes and be comfortable in the water. While in API, the student’s water survival training will consist of demonstrating and using the basic survival strokes (breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary back, and American crawl) for distances up to 200 yards while wearing flight gear, and swimming one mile within 80 minutes in flight suits. A more thorough summary of the physical training and swim requirements can be found at the Naval Aviation Schools Command web site. https://www.cnet.navy.mil/nascweb/survival/survival_api.htm Maximum Allowable Weight Maximum allowable weight in Naval Aviation is 235 pounds. It is recommended that students be well under 235 pounds before beginning training. Weights above 204 pounds or below 136 pounds may preclude students from flying in ejection seat aircraft. Anthropometric Standards Aviation candidates who are shorter than 5’5” or taller than 6’2” may have problems fitting in some or all of the training and fleet aircraft. ALL students will be evaluated for anthropometric compatibility in training and fleet aircraft. Housing Housing at NAS Pensacola is limited. If space is not available or the service member does not intend to stay in base housing or the BOQ they should inform PSD so that they can receive a housing allotment. BAH rates for Pensacola, Florida can be found on the DFAS website (http://www.dfas.mil). Service members should verify that their lease contains a military clause. Please be advised, Whiting bound SNA’s WILL be required to live in the NAS Whiting BOQ. All SNA’s WILL contact Flight Management BEFORE signing any leases. This will prevent you from having to pay large penalties for breaking a lease. Leave and Liberty If the service member desires to travel outside of the local area greater than 350 driving miles or any time they are traveling by plane an approved leave request is required. The service member must have completed BOLTC, IFS, their NOMI physical and PFA/Swim Screen before leave will be granted. If the service member has a stash job they must inform their supervisor of their leave request. If the service member desires to travel outside of the local area but less than 350 driving miles they must sign the Travel Log indicating the destination address and a contact number. The service member must initial the Travel Log upon return. 6 Hurricane Information The hurricane season for Northwest Florida extends from April through November. It is important that service members attached to API provide current recall phone numbers for evacuation purposes.
