Dear Head Teacher,
Chess for Primary School children
On behalf of the Tayside & Fife Chess Association, I am writing to enquire about chess activities for children in
Primary Schools.
Although we have organised evening chess leagues for member clubs for many decades, along with various
weekend chess congresses, we are not aware of any events specifically arranged for school children in Dundee.
Of course, the difficulty with evening fixtures is that they start and finish rather late to be suitable for primary
school children.
TAFCA is interested to know what chess activities are organised by schools either during school hours or in after
school clubs etc. We would like to explore the possibilities for helping to promote and organise some events and
activities for Class 4- Class 7 pupils.
Initially, we think it would be helpful to conduct a short survey of all schools (as attached) so that the TAFCA
Committee can consider and suggest arrangements which will be suitable and likely to attract significant support.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could find a few minutes to complete and return the attached survey form to
me before 14th October 2012, so that some plans could be formulated for the following Winter school terms. A
survey form is available on the TAFCA website, should you wish to complete it there http://www.tafca.co.uk
On a Worldwide basis, GM Susan Polgar (one of the famous 3 Polgar sisters) is very active in the promotion of
chess in schools and you may be interested in the following websites :-

http://chessbenefits.blogspot.co.uk/
They describe the significant educational benefits which can be achieved by involving young children in chess.
With many thanks and good wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Alan P. Borwell,
TAFCA President &
International CC Master & Arbiter
