The House of Europe in Rhodes is a non governmental, non for profit Organization
founded with the purpose of spreading the European ideals and the
communication among peoples of Europe, in order to facilitate European
integration and create a network of dialogue towards this goal inside Europe and
the Mediterranean, and with the rest of the world.
The House of Europe in Rhodes was founded on December 30th, 1999 and,
today, it counts 200 members.
It is an active member of both the European Network for Education and
Training e.V. (EUNET) and the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation
for the Dialogue Between Cultures.
During its short history it has exhibited a long list of activities based solely in the
volunteer work of its board and members and the support of local authorities. The
long list of activities includes dozens of conferences, lectures, cultural events,
exhibitions, contests and more on local, national, regional and international
levels, with themes the common heritage, history and culture of the region,
immigration, integration, among others. It has also developed projects to assist
educational structures for children with special needs and liaised for the
participation of social workers in seminars and further training in other European
countries. Finally, the House of Europe in Rhodes promoted and supported the
creation of a House of Europe in Cyprus back in 2008.
Among the most prestigious projects and initiatives are:
1st International Conference of the House of Europe in Rhodes (2001),
on “The Language as a means of Communication and Intercultural

on: «Romas: So known yet so unknown to us all: The position of Gypsies
in the enlarged Europe»
The European Youth Conference “Waves of Democracy” (2007). A
Conference organized within the celebrations for the 50 Years Anniversary
since the Treaty of Rome simultaneously in Brandbjerg, Denmark and in
Rhodes, Greece as a North - South Dialogue.

o 11/05/2008 - Guided visit of the Sacred Places of 3 Monotheistic
Religions in the Medieval Town of Rhodes.
o 10-23/05/2008 - "Mosaic of Photographs", a collection of
photographs of Rhodes.
o 10-23/05/2008 – “Crossed Emotions in Colours”, a painting
contest, with the International School of Rhodes.
o 23/05/2008 - One day Conference «Mosaic of Cultures: East-West
1st Conference of the Houses of Europe in Greece and Cyprus
(2010). Organized with the initiative of the House of Rhodes and the
Houses with the participation of the Houses of Europe in: Athens "Lord
Byron", Thessaloniki, Patras, Kalamata, Cefallonia, Cyprus and Rhodes.
Furthermore, the House of Europe in Rhodes has participated in to two major
In European Program GRUNDTVIG-REPERES as a partner. The
working language was French. The program aim has been to register the
historic events of Europe since 1815 to nowadays and to create the
necessary tools (manuals, power points, maps, plans, questionnaires) to
help the formation of European citizens on taking conscience of their
European Identity. The other partners were: the House of Europe of
Toulouse (France), the European Network of Education and Training
EUNET (Germany) and the CVCE which administrates the numeric
encyclopedia ENA (Luxembourg).
Along with the Municipality of Rhodes (partner), the House of Europe in
Rhodes participated as an associate to the action MARE NOSTRUM
- A Heritage Trail along the Phoenician maritime routes and historic port-
cities of the Mediterranean Sea, which takes inspiration from the large
exhibition ”La Mediterranée des Phoeniciens, de Tyr à Carthage” displayed
at the Institut du Monde Arabe/IMA in Paris (6.11.2007-20.04.2008) and
other different autonomous initiatives in the European Mediterranean
countries on the re-qualification of strategic Mediterranean port-cities.
Financed by European funds under the Programme Euromed Heritage IV,
the action targets six Mediterranean Countries (Italy, Tunisia, Malta,
Lebanon, Syria, Greece) that in the past have been routes of the Punic
people and culture.
Objectives of MARE NOSTRUM are from the one side to:
o contribute to the public awareness-raising of the preservation and
promotion of the Mediterranean port-cities sites and its
archaeological sites along the Phoenician ring-thread routes in a
o strengthen mutual understanding and dialogue between the
Mediterranean basin cultures and communities by valorising and
promoting their Cultural Heritage in a more communicative and
educational effective way;
and from the other side:
o enhance the antique relationship port-city as core of the tangible
and intangible Mediterranean heritage promoting effective
management plan to reduce the marginalisation of archaeological
sites (Tyre, Tartous/Arward/Amrit, Siracusa/Ortigia,
Carthage/Beja, Malta, among which Tarxien/Tal-Silg, Rhodes);
o enhance the economic and tourist development through the
definition of management plans of the target sites to promote
sustainable tourism and craft of quality.
The MARE NOSTRUM program concluded in Rhodes, June 2012 with
various events and international participations.
The most significant contribution of the House of Europe in Rhodes is the creation
and running, since 2010, of the Rhodes Model Regional Co-operation
(RhodesMRC). RhodesMRC is an academic simulation of international
organizations specialized in regional institutions. It is the first and only such
international simulation of the “Union for the Mediterranean”, which convenes
yearly in October, since 2010, with the participation of young students,
professionals and diplomats from all the Euro-Mediterranean area.
Among its supporters, partners and affiliates, through the years, are included:
the Prefecture of Dodecanese, the Rhodes Bar Association, the International
Centre for Black Sea Studies, the Center for International and European
Studies of Kadir Has University, Istanbul, Turkey and the Center for
Governance and Culture in Europe of the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland.
Furthermore, the Scientific Committee consists of Professors and Experts from
almost all major Greek Universities and Institutions from Turkey and the USA.
Finally, the House of Europe in Rhodes, acts as information point for all the
activities of the Anna Lindh Foundation to the local community and abroad,
communicating to its contacts the project proposals and news of the Foundation
and handling preparation and participation of the local youth to the related
