“Parenteral Nutrition in Neonates and Children with Intestinal Failure
Secondary to Short Bowel Syndrome”
Objectives: Appreciation of the genesis and development of total parenteral
nutrition from the laboratory to the bedside, including the early crucial and pivotal
role of Dr. Diller Groff in its first successful clinical application to the growth and
development of human infants with catastrophic gastrointestinal anomalies.
Appreciation of the importance of prompt parenteral nutritional support of
premature neonates, and in the early comprehensive, integrated management of
infants with intestinal failure. Appreciation of the role of intravenous lipid
emulsion composition in the etiology and the amelioration of (and possible
prevention of) intestinal failure associated liver disease (IFALD).
