             Hydrophobic (silicon based coating)



     • Spray application of the coating material possible in most of the cases
     • Water and water soluble dirt do not stick well to the surface
     • No bonding between lime and surface – lime can be removed easily
     • Coating material levels the topography of the glass
     • Material also works as anti-fingerprint coating on mattfinished glass


     Disadvantages
     • Oil and oily dirt as well as surfactants stick to the surface very well
     • Sometimes dust attracting because of electrostatic charge
     • Slippery surface: gaskets do not fit, not suitable for walkable areas
     • Weak or no bonding between coating material and substrate: short durability

                             Super-hydrophobic (Lotus®)

     • Microporous surface in combination with hydrophobic coating
     • Water forms drops which can not stick to the surface
     • Dirt can not stick to the surface and can be washed away by water


     Disadvantages:
     • Coating is extremely weak and unstable
     • Coating is visible in most cases (translucent, not transparent)
     • No “self-repair-effect” of the coating in contrast to the natural lotus leaf
     • Surfactants adhere very well and can block the effect permanently
     • Coating is removed by and by – porous surface remains and is much harder
       to clean than an uncoated surface
     • Microporous surface can not be repaired on site

     • Microporous, hydrophilic surface of titanium dioxide, penetrated by water
     • Organic dirt can be destroyed by ultraviolet light and will be swept away by water


     Disadvantages:
     • Lime and other inorganic dirt incorporates in the microporous structure
      and can not be destroyed by ultraviolet light
     • No E2C-effect for lime. Surface is harder to clean than an uncoated surface
     • Water is spreading lime over the surface destroying successively the E2C-effect
     • Photocatalytic coating sometimes causes changing interferences (prismatic colours)

     • Silicon based and fluorine-retaining systems are water repellent. It has to be
       considered, that even on these coatings residues remain on the surface (e.g.
       drying water droplets).
     • Photocatalytic coatings only can destroy organic dirt. They can not degrade
       inorganic dirt like lime, salts etc…
     • Photocatalytic coatings only can be effective in combination with ultraviolet light
       which do not appear in internal space.




     • There is not patent remedy for every application.
     • Systems that redundantise regular cleaning still do not exist.




     However, self cleaning glasses are still provided in the market!

     1   The glass is coated with Nano-E2C before it is wetted with water. The
         coating hampers the water to get directly in contact with the glass surface.

     2   Water, bases and complexing agents can not extract ions like sodium and
         potassium from the glass.
         Water cannot incorporate into the glass and no smooth gelatinous layer is
         formed.


         The process of glass corrosion is strongly minimised !
