4th Grade Math Tutorial
Objective: Use models and pictures to add and subtract rational numbers with like
Overview: Students will add and subtract fractions with like denominators using
models to show the problem.
Materials: Fraction circles, worksheet (file 1_8.jpg), pencil
Introduction: Tell the student that he/she will be using fraction circles to show
how to add and subtract fractions with like denominators. Stress to the student
that the denominators must be the same for them to be added or subtracted.
Practice: Model for the student how to use the fraction circles to show how to
add 1/8 + 2/8 = 3/8, to subtract 3/5 - 1/5 = 2/5, etc. Do not try to change improper
fractions to mixed numbers or reducing fractions to lowest terms until the student
demonstrates mastery of adding the fractions. As you work, explain what you are
Have the student compute some addition and subtraction problems with you,
Examples: 3/10 + 3/10 7/8 - 3/8
5/9 - 2/9 5/12+1/12
Independent Practice: As students become more confident, they may work
independently. After students understand the process, begin working on showing
how to reduce to simplest terms by using the fraction circles to show the reduced
Closure: Ask the student, 'When would you use fractions?" "Could you use them
to double a recipe?" "How else?"
