South Fayette Holds Special Board Meeting to
Discuss Major Cuts Necessary to Balance Budget
South Fayette Township, PA – On Monday, February 5 at 7 p.m. the South Fayette Board of School
Directors will hold a special meeting in the High School Conference Center to discuss budget matters
and pass the preliminary 2007-2008 district budget.
Community members are encouraged to come and learn more about the tough decisions facing the
Board throughout the budget process, such as possible cuts in programs and services, increased class
size, and a millage increase. Due to skyrocketing special education costs, reduced assessments, costs
of educating students with English as a second language, bussing costs, and rising enrollment with
decreasing state and federal funding, major cuts will be necessary to bridge the $3.5 million
difference between proposed expenditure and revenues. Many options will be discussed and the
public is encouraged to attend and provide feedback.
The Board will also make decisions related to Act 1 and the possible changes in earned income or
personal income tax collection in the township. Act 1 requires school boards to place a referendum
question on the May 2007 ballot requiring a vote on either increasing their earned income tax (EIT) or
replacing it with a personal income tax (PIT) to fund the required property tax reductions outlined in
the law. Any recommended tax shift must also remain revenue neutral to the school district. This
means the district will not receive any additional revenues as a result of this change.
