DITMI Slide Making Policy
Statement: The Division of Information Technology and Medical Informatics
offers Marshall University School of Medicine students, staff and faculty the
service of printing computer presentation files (i.e., PowerPoint) to 2" x 2" film
slides. There is no cost for the service, but users must supply their own film and
developing (see below).
Purpose: This document defines the methods of submission and
recommendations applying to files to be printed to the slide maker.
Presentation files submitted for slide printing should be in Microsoft PowerPoint
format (version 97 or later). Presentations should be proofed, previewed and
in final form. DITMI is not responsible for any design errors (shifted objects,
wrong colors, misspellings…). Supplying film and developing services for
subsequent prints due to errors in will be the responsibility of user.
Important note: the dimensions of a 2" x 2" film slide are different from that of a
computer monitor's screen (a 2" x 2" slide is wider when compared to its height).
For this reason, slide layouts can change when printed to the slide maker. Since
PowerPoint assumes its files will be displayed on a computer screen by default,
you should set the change the page size either when creating your slide show or
when proofing it prior to submission. To do so in PowerPoint, click on File from
the menu bar and then Page Setup... from the pull-down menu. Change the
Slides sized for: field to 35mm slides and save your file. Step through the
entire slide show to ensure that this change in proportion has not adversely
affected the layout of your slides.
1.2 File Size
In our experience, files of larger than in size do not print well to the slide maker.
If your slide show file is greater than 5MB, divide it up into multiple files and
submit each one separately for printing.
1.3 Submit to
Computer presentation files can be submitted on 1.44MB (3.5") floppy, CD-ROM
or ZIP disk to Vickie White in room G15B of the Medical Education Building.
Alternatively, they can be attached to an email message to
2. Film and Developing
We recommend Kodak Ektachrome 100 or Kodak Elite100 slide film.
DITMI does not develop slide film. We recommend Kramer's Photo Supply at
1359 Adams Ave and 304-523-9511. Kramer's offers same day slide developing
on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week. Slide film submitted by
10:00am on those days will be ready by 4:00pm on that same day.
3.1 Time Constraints
Slide requests will be processed in the order that they are received. Slide
printing jobs can take several hours depending on the number and complexity of
slides. For this reason, please allow at least two days for your slides to be
printed. See "2.2 Developing," above for Kramer's slide development schedule.
3.2 Font Issues
DITMI does not guarantee the availability of fonts beyond those standard to
Windows. For accurate printouts, use standard fonts such as Arial, Helvetica or
Times New Roman.
