       Mock Trial Assignment

    TASK

    For this assignment the class will be separated into groups of 8-10. In each group there will be the following
    roles:
            Judge                                                        Crown Prosecutor (in some cases 2)
            Court Clerk                                                  Defence Attorney (in some cases 2)
                                                                         Witness (2 Crown; 2 Defence)

    PROCEDURE:

         In your group, read the trial.
         Have a note-taker record important information (attached).
         Determine the roles / characters of each group member.
         Review the Task List (handout attached).
         Research your roles based on the Task List.
         “Act” out your trial in your group…this will take you probably one whole class period…timeline is
             included in your package.

         Reflection: Complete the presentation and submit to Mrs. Montgomery
    REFLECTION:

    As a group, create a presentation of your learning of the Criminal Trial process. Answer the following
    questions related to the outcomes:

GCO CR1:
  1. Identify and describe if the two elements of a criminal offense (actus reus and mens rea) are present. How do you know?
     Give evidence from the case / trial.

    2. What type of offense is being tried in this case (indictable, summary conviction, hybrid/quasi-criminal offense)?

    3. Identify the acceptable steps in the trial proceedings based on the type of offense (i.e.jury no jury, accused, no accused,
       preliminary hearing or not, etc).

GCO CR3:
  1. Identify and explain the roles of various officers of the court and other parties involved in the trials. What role did each
     person play? Why was this an important or necessary role?

    2. Describe the important components of the criminal trial process

    3. What is the defence being used? Review powerpoint on my site as a group.

GCO CR4:
   1. What was the sentence? Were their other options? What were they? Was the best / most appropriate sentence determined? Why
